Ohio State Leads Michigan, Northwestern

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 26. THE No. 13 Ohio State men's swimming and diving team leads No. 6 Northwestern, 98-88, and No. 12 Michigan, 95-91, Friday at the end of the first day of a two-day double-dual meet at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Wildcats hold a 100-86 lead over the Wolverines.

Buckeye divers enjoyed yet another successful meet, sweeping both the diving events. Ohio State swept the 3-meter springboard against both teams. Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash/Cascade Christian) earned the victory in a score of 378.95. Burkley Showe (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) was the runner-up with a score of 322.70 and Nick Hanneman (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) rounded out the podium with a score of 330.10. The Buckeyes also filled the Top 3 spots on the 1-meter springboard. This time, Hanneman earned the victory in a score of 329.25, with Harkness taking home the silver with a score of 314.20. Ryan Jefferson (Fr., Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood) dove a score of 308.95 to take third.

The Buckeyes kicked off the meet by defeating Michigan in the 400-yard medley relay to earn their first win for the night. The team of R.J. Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Felipe Travesso (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lawrences North), Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) and Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) swam a season-best time of 3:16.29. The time earned the men second-place against Northwestern.

The Wolverines dominated the 1,000-yard freestyle, with Matt Patton (9:12.34) and Charlie Houchin (9:14.22) taking first and second, respectively. Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) was the fastest swimmer for Ohio State, hitting the wall in a time of 9:17.40 to record a third-place finish against Michigan and a victory over Northwestern.

Northwestern's Eric Nilsson swam the 200-yard freestyle in a NCAA ‘B' standard of 1:37.00 to win the event. Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) stopped the clock at 1:40.91 to round out the Top 3 against the Wildcats. His time earned him fourth place against the Wolverines.

Doyle and Voelker captured the Top 2 spots in the 50-yard freestyle when scored against Michigan. Doyle swam a time of 20.52, to place third amongst the Wildcats and defeated all Wolverine swimmers. Voelker claimed second place in 20.85. Kyle Bubolz (20.39) swam the fastest time of the evening to earn another victory for Northwestern.

Michigan swept the 200-yard butterfly with Alex Vanderkaay edging out Northwestern swimmer Eric Nilsson (1:47.85) in a NCAA ‘B' time of 1:47.63. Ohio State's Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill) completed the race in 1:51.71 to finish second against the Wildcats and fourth against the Wolverines.

Lemyre and Nate King raced to second and third place, respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke. Lemyre clocked a NCAA ‘B' provisional time of 1:46.93, while King touched in next at 1:47.26. Wildcat Matt Grevers secured his trip to the NCAA championships when he won the event in automatic qualifying time of 1:43.07. Daniel Malnik (Fr., Rishon le-Zion, Israel/Gan-Nahum) recorded a second-place against both Northwestern and Michigan in the 200-yard breaststroke. He swam the event in 2:02.95.

The Buckeyes defeated Michigan in the 200-yard freestyle relay to end the first day of competition. The squad of Doyle, Voelker, Taggart and Elber swam the sprint relay in 1:20.99. The time earned them second place in relation to Northwestern.

Competition will resume Saturday at noon.
