MATT COLE WINS 200 BACK

Florida senior Matt Cole won the 100 back in a 1:53.68, ahead of Southern Cal sophomore Leonardo Costa (1:54.79) and Minnesota junior Alex Massura (1:54.99). Fourth at the 50, Cole took control by the 100 and continued to pull ahead. He was second in this event at last year’s NCAAs.
“This was my first time ever doing a 200 back short course meters,” said Cole. “I’d never even done it in practice. So coming in this morning felt a little weird.”
“I didn’t feel as good as in the morning,” said Massura, from Brazil, who was third in the 100 back and qualified for finals just .01 behind Cole. “I was expecting to go faster than this at the end of the season, but I did my best time so I can’t complain.”
Texas junior Matt Ulrickson, the winner of the 100 back, was fourth in 1:55.47. Arizona sophomore Kris Souther was fifth in 1:55.51, South Carolina freshman Joey Faltraco was sixth in 1:56.08, Florida sophomore Mike Jansen was seventh in 1:56.25, and Harvard freshman Dan Shevchik was eighth in 1:57.18.
Stanford freshman Dan Westcott won the consolation final in 1:55.87, followed by Georgia sophomore Marc Lindsay in 1:55.95. Kirk Hampleman of Auburn was 11th (1:55.97), Simon Thirsk of Hawaii 12th (1:56.38), Ross Powells of Tennessee 13th (1:56.76), Beau Wiebel of Georgia 14th (1:57.85), Matt Allen of Arizona 15th (1:58.33) and Arunas Savickas of Brigham Young was 16th in 1:58.69.
