TCU Rolls Past North Texas, Incarnate Word

DENTON, Texas, January 25. ERICA Tate and Cheryl Townsend both recorded two wins as the TCU women's swimming and diving team downed North Texas and Incarnate Word on Wednesday night at the Pohl Recreation Center.

"North Texas is a good team and I'm very pleased to get the win tonight," said TCU head coach Richard Sybesma.

The Frogs improved their record to 12-4 overall as they defeated mid-major No. 24 North Texas 83-48, propelling the overall series record to 16-0.

Erica Tate recorded her first win of the meet in the 50-free event, taking the top spot in a time of 23.69. The Grapevine, Texas, native returned to the win column with a time of 57.17 in the 100-fly.

Cheryl Townsend also earned two wins, the first coming in the 200-back in a time of 2:06.51. Townsend recorded her third multi-win performance in the last four meets by taking the top spot in the 400-IM in a time of 4:28.01.

Stephanie Futscher and Tara Sullivan also recorded wins for the women on Wednesday. Futscher, a freshman from Irving, Texas, earned first place in the 200-fly in a clocking of 2:07.98, which was over five seconds ahead of the next competitor. Sullivan recorded her third win in the last two meets in the 100-free in a time of 2:06.51.

The women swept the relay events, with Lori Birkhead, Maribeth Pottenger, Natalie Melenric and Erica Tate kicking off the meet in a time of 1:49.22. Tate contributed to her fourth overall win of the night when she teamed up with Melenric, Sullivan and Karen Sandifer to take the top spot in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:37.59.

The women also swept the diving events, with Jennifer Ferguson and Hannah Hale earning victories. Ferguson recorded a score of 246.23 in the three-meter dive, while Hale earned her first win of the season in the one-meter with a score of 237.30, followed by Claudia Combs and Ferguson in the medal positions.
