North Carolina Sweeps North Carolina State

RALEIGH, North Carolina, January 23. NORTH Carolina's men's and women's swimming and diving teams made head coach Frank Comfort's final trip to swim against arch rival NC State a memorable one as the Tar Heel women defeated the Pack 191-52 and the UNC men triumphed 144-99 at Carmichael Natatorium. UNC's women won all 13 events in the meet while the men won eight of 13 events highlighted by wins in both relay events.

Sophomore Hank Browning led the Tar Heels on the men's side as he won both the 100- and 200-yard freestyles while also swimming on the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team. UNC swept both relay events with junior Keith Laabs and junior Zach Swartz swimming on both relays.

Carolina also swept the diving events with senior Jon Fox winning the one-meter and junior Ryan Funderburk the three-meter.

The Tar Heels were locked in a close battle with the Wolfpack after the first diving break when sophomore Yi-Khy Saw led a 1-2-3 UNC sweep in the 200-yard butterfly to give the Heels breathing room. Shortly after that freshman Chip Peterson scored a big win by edging State's Andrew Lester by two one-hundredths of a second in the 500-yard freestyle (4:29.93 to 4:29.95). Carolina's depth also played a role as a 2-3-4 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke in the penultimate event led to a comfortable final margin.

The women swept all 13 events. Double winners included sophomore Whitney Sprague in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and freshman Eliza Butts in both sprint freestyle events. Sophomore Aubrette Biegel swam on both winning relay squads and freshman Alison Clemens (400 individual medley) and junior Lindsey Marck (200 butterfly) each won one event and also swam on a winning relay.

The Tar Heels improved to 7-1 overall and 4-3 overall on the women's and men's side. Their ACC records improved to 4-0 and 3-1. The Wolfpack men are 3-4 and 2-2 and the women 3-6 and 0-4.
