Ohio State Closes Dual-Meet Season with Win

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 21. THE Ohio State women's swimming and diving team defeated Kenyon College, 193-101, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Sunday to conclude the Buckeye's dual-meet season. The Buckeyes dominated the meet, winning 14 of the 16 events. Seniors Julie Broms (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian), each won on senior day.

The Buckeyes jumped to an early lead with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/ Hupp Yenn), Rebekah Rychalvsky (Sr., Sydney Australia/Castle Hill), Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev) and Jill Lockhart (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Yorktown) garnered the win in a time of 1:46.60.

Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) recorded the team's first individual win in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of 10:20.66. Jill Lockhart and Farriss Blaskovits (Fr., Nepean, Ontario/Mother Theresa) sandwiched Kenyon's Tina Ertel to finish first and third in the 200-yard freestyle. Lockhart swam a season-best time of 1:52.43 in the 200-yard freestyle to win the event, while Blaskovits touched in third with a time of 1:56.01.

Gunenc stopped the clock first in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing with a time of 58.83. Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch) and Linda Lund went 2-3 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Schwitzer was the runner-up in 1:06.16 and Lund was third in 1:06.88.

Buelens (2:02.81) picked up her second win of the day in the 200-yard butterfly, finishing eight seconds ahead of the next competitor. Liz Osterer (Sr., Ontario, Canada/Sir Robert Borden) captured the bronze in a time of 2:13.62.

Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and Stasia von Rahl (So., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph's) finished second and third, respectively, in the 50-yard freestyle. Rennebohm swam the sprint in 25.05, while Von Rahl swam it in 25.42.

Katie Bell (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Graham School) continued her successful weekend, winning the 1-meter springboard with a score of 294.90. Teammate Julie Broms finished behind her in second place with a score of 287.78. Broms then claimed her last career diving victory in the Ron O'Brien diving well on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 333.83. Bell took second with the score of 326.03.

Ohio State swept the 100-yard freestyle, with Lockhart claiming her second win of the meet in a time of 52.66. Linda Lund touched the wall second in 52.86 and Elaine Chan came in third with a time of 53.83.

Gunenc and Stephanie Fennell (Sr., Campbelville, Ontario/Milton District) swam to a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard backstroke. Gunenc's time was 2:05.85, while Fennell posted a time of 2:09.55. Schweitzer (2:20.52) and Rychalvsky (2:22.96) picked up on the pattern, finishing first and third, respectively, in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Lockhart captured her third win in the 500-yard freestyle, hitting the wall first in 5:06.47. Von Rahl's time of 5:09.07 earned her second place. Following Lockhart's example, Buelens (57.48) added a third win to her resume in the next event – the 100-yard butterfly. Sarah Krone (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) rounded out the Top 3 in a time of 59.83.

Farris Blaskovits edged out Kenyon's Jessica Connors (2:11.93) in the 200-yard individual medley, completing the event in 2:11.84. The Buckeyes dominated their final swim in the McCorkle Pavilion when the quad of Rennebohm, Buelens, Lund and Chan swam a winning time of 3:31.28 in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Gunenc, Von Rahl, Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) and Christina Sarnecki (So., Ann Arbor, Mich./Dexter) finished behind them to take home second place in 3:35.25.

"Jill Lockhart, hands down, was the swimmer of the meet," Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. "She is an emerging freshman who is stepping it up more and more, which bodes well for us at the end of the season. We are moving in the right direction – our relays are coming together. I feel really good about going into the Big Ten meet."

The women will conclude their season at the 2007 Big Ten Championships, Feb. 7-10, in Minneapolis, Minn. Those who qualify for the NCAA championships will return to Minneapolis, March 8-10.
