Meet of the Week Recap: No 17 Indianapolis Women Upset No. 7 Grand Valley State, 119-112

ALLENDALE, Michigan, January 20. THE No. 17 University of Indianapolis women overcame a diving no-show to upset No. 7 Grand Valley State, 119-112, in Allendale, Mich., on Saturday in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week. Overall, Indy captured eight events, while GVSU won five. With no divers in its line-up, Indianapolis utilized a deep-and-powerful swimming performance to absorb the 26 unanswered diving points GVSU had to begin the meet.

Alison Smith (200 free and back) and Isabela Tafur (50 and 100 free) led Indianapolis with a pair of doubles, while Jenna Thayer (200 IM and fly) took a pair of swimming titles for GVSU. Jennifer Hillson also swept the diving events for GVSU with teammate Raelyn Prelewitz as her only competition.

200 medley relay
Indy picked up a quick 11-6 win by winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Amanda Herd, Niki Stevens, Valerie Crosby and Isabela Tafur touched first in 1:52.02 to edge the GVSU's team of Danielle Buglio, Sam Stump, Jenna Thayer and Allison Scholz, which clocked a second-place 1:52.44.

Indy trailed going into the final leg, but Tafur dropped a 24.03 anchor leg to overtake Scholz for the win.

1000 freestyle
Indy snagged a 21-15 advantage when Ellie Miller got her hand to the wall first in 10:53.44. Meanwhile, GVSU went 2-3 with Katie Lawrie (10:56.27) and Megan Hahler (11:13.44) finishing second and third, respectively.

200 freestyle
Indianapolis pushed its lead to 35-20 in the 200 free with a 1-2 effort. Alison Smith nearly clocked a provisional time with a first-place performance of 1:57.74. Teammate Holly Spohr placed second in 2:00.23, while GVSU's Sam Stump took third in 2:01.20.

50 freestyle
With the impending diving break where Indianapolis had no one competing, Indy did a good job of stockpiling points to take a 49-25 advantage in the sprint free. Isabela Tafur hit the wall first in 25.09, while teammate Casey Owen placed third in 26.10. GVSU's Allison Scholz split the difference in 25.84 for second.

200 IM
Grand Valley responded in the 200 IM as Jenna Thayer touched first in 2:13.59 to help GVSU knock the deficit down to 56-37. Alison VanKampen also took third for GVSU in 2:15.10, while Indy's Katie Murray turned in a second-place 2:15.04.

One-meter diving
Indy's advantage took a huge hit as GVSU's divers amassed 13 unanswered points to come with 56-50. Jennifer Hillson won with 233.47 points, while Raelyn Prelewitz took second with 225.37 points.

200 butterfly
Grand Valley made it a meet in the 200 fly to pull within one point, 63-62. Jenna Thayer notched her second individual crown of the meet with a first-place time of 2:14.93. Indy's Mary Secoges touched well behind in 2:19.32, while GVSU's Nina Reynolds took third in 2:20.24.

100 freestyle
After absorbing some devastating blows the past three events, Indy countered in the 100 free with a 1-3 effort to take a 76-68 lead. Isabela Tafur snared her second title of the meet with a 54.63, just off the B-cut threshold. Meanwhile, GVSU's Allison Scholz took second in 56.19, while Casey Owen placed third for Indy in 56.67.

200 backstroke
Alison Smith helped herself to her second win with a B-cut time of 2:08.75 in the 200 back to push Indy's lead to 88-75. Teammate Laura Folsom clocked a third-place 2:14.27, while GVSU's Danielle Buglio placed second in 2:14.22

500 freestyle
GVSU bounced back to cut the gap to 93-89 with a 1-3 finish of its own. Katie Lawrie turned in a first-place time of 5:21.12, while teammate Megan Hahler placed third in 5:24.13. Holly Spohr provided a second-place time of 5:22.17 for Indy's top time.

Three-meter diving
Another easy 13 points went GVSU's way as Grand Valley captured a 102-93 lead with two events to go. Jennifer Hillson swept the diving events with 244.05 points, while Raelyn Prelewitz took second with 237.30 points.

200 breaststroke
Indy began its comeback with a win in the 200 breast to chop the deficit to 110-104. Niki Stevens provisionally qualified for NCAAs with a first-place time of 2:26.64, while GVSU went 2-3 with Alison VanKampen (2:32.16) and Sam Stump (2:33.92) garnering second and third, respectively.

200 freestyle relay
Indianapolis did what it had to do in the final event to pull off a huge Division II upset, 119-112. Indy's A team of Alison Smith, Casey Owen, Valerie Crosby and Holly Spohr clocked a first-place 1:40.35, while the B squad of Abby Adrian, Amanda Herd, Ellie Miller and Mary Secoges took second in 1:43.38. GVSU's B team of Robyn Kobes, Eli Leskovar, Kelli Anguilm and Beth Cyr rounded out the podium in 1:43.54.
