Meet of the Week Recap: No. 5 Grand Valley State Men Down No. 12 Indianapolis, 142-99

ALLENDALE, Michigan, January 20. ALTHOUGH the No. 12 University of Indianapolis men came out swinging to hold a lead after the initial four events, they just could not withstand the overall depth of the No. 5 Grand Valley State squad in a 142-99 loss in Allendale, Mich., on Saturday in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week. Overall, Grand Valley State picked up seven titles, while Indianapolis won six in a fairly even top-level meet that came down to the nickel-and-dime points claimed by GVSU.

Justin Barkel paced GVSU with a pair of titles (200 IM and breast), while Evan Betts swept the diving crowns for Grand Valley State. Alex Arestis won the 50 and 100 free as the top sprinter of the day for Indy.

200 medley relay
GVSU jumped out to a 13-4 lead after the 200 medley relay. The Grand Valley foursome of Justin Vasquez, Hans Hill, Kyle Barrons and Aaron Renton clocked the top time of 1:39.25, while Indy's quartet of Chad Damitz, Jeremy Lindauer, James Landis and Alex Arestis finished second in 1:39.48.

Luckily for GVSU, Barrons was able to build a full second lead after the fly leg, because Arestis anchored a 21.32 split to pull Indy within .23 seconds of GVSU.

1000 freestyle
Indy cut the gap to 20-16 with a strong showing in the distance freestyle. Hanno Ahonen touched first in 10:09.97, while GVSU claimed 2-3 with Ross Perry (10:15.00) and Ryan Kraai (10:19.03) placed second and third, respectively.

200 freestyle
Indianapolis took a slim 28-27 advantage in the 200 free with a 1-3 effort. Yaman Oguz hit the wall first in 1:46.28, while teammate Kieran O'Neill finished third in 1:49.18. GVSU's Dan Kimble split the difference in 1:47.50.

50 freestyle
In the splash-and-dash, Indy increased its lead to 41-33. Alex Arestis won the event in 22.36, while teammate Greg Jarvis touched third in 22.97. GVSU's Aaron Renton picked up second-place honors in 22.90.

200 IM
Grand Valley kept up the excitement of the back-and-forth meet by countering for a 47-46 lead after the 200 IM. Justin Barkel clocked a first-place time of 1:59.88, while Justin Vasquez turned in a third-place effort of 2:01.78 for GVSU. Jeremy Lindauer claimed second for Indy in 2:00.58.

Three-meter diving
Diving made a huge impact on the meet with Grand Valley striking out to a 63-48 advantage with a 1-2-3 performance. Evan Betts won the event with 256.73 points, wile Joel Overway took second with 252.36 points. Ryan Smith claimed third with 245.40 points for GVSU, while Randy Weiss picked up fourth as the top finisher for Indy with 219.75 points.

200 butterfly
Grand Valley took a commanding 79-51 lead with its second consecutive top-three sweep. Tony Stumpo hit the wall first in 2:02.74, while Kyle Barrons (2:03.29) and Phil Watkins (2:04.25) garnered second and third place, respectively. Meanwhile, Drew Johnson finished fourth for Indy's top finish in 2:05.30.

100 freestyle
Indy rebounded in the 100 free to chop the deficit to 86-63. Alex Arestis won his second sprint free title with a time of 48.25, while teammate Kieran O'Neill took third in 49.25. Justin Barkel clocked a second-place 48.88 for GVSU.

200 backstroke
Indianapolis continued to chip away at the lead, cutting it to 93-75 after the 200 back. Thad Wallin won the event in 2:01.07, while teammate Chad Damitz placed third in 2:02.08. GVSU's Paul Tansey provided the buffer with a second-place time of 2:01.66.

500 freestyle
Grand Valley returned to the win column when Kyle Burgher held GVSU to a 106-81 advantage when he touched first in 4:57.48. Ryan Kraai also grabbed top points for GVSU with a third-place time of 5:00.79, while Indy's Hanno Ahonen finished in second with a time of 4:58.97.

One-meter diving
The second diving break place the momentum firmly on GVSU's side as Grand Valley pulled off another 1-2-3 diving performance to take a 122-83 lead. Evan Betts captured his second title with 251.63 points, while Joel Overway (238.88) and Ryan Smith (224.70) took second and third, respectively. Randy Weiss provided Indy its top finish with a fifth-place tally of 216.60 points.

200 breaststroke
Grand Valley pushed its advantage to 136-88 with a 1-3 in the 200 breast. Justin Barkel clocked a 2:11.90 for his second individual title of the meet, while Hans Hill finished third in 2:16.77. Jeremy Lindauer split the difference for Indy in 2:13.00 for second.

200 freestyle relay
With the final dual meet outcome no longer in doubt, Indianapolis showed some fire by capturing the 200 free in 1:29.03 as the contingent of Kieran O‘Neill, Hanno Ahonen, Chad Damitz and Greg Jarvis held off GVSU's team of Ben Jylkka, Aaron Renton, Kyle Barrons and Dan Kimble, who took second in 1:29.98. The final score wound up 142-99 in favor of GVSU.
