Buckeye Men’s Swimming and Diving Downs Western Illinois, 120-79

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 20. THE Ohio State men's swimming and diving team defeated Western Illinois, 120-79, in an unconventional meet line-up in Iowa City, Iowa. The men competed in non-traditional events such as the 100-yard individual medley and 50-yard distances of strokes.

Ohio State kicked off the meet with a 1-2 finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill), Felipe Travesso (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lawrences North), Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) and Joel Elber (Fr., Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) earned the win in 3:29.39, while the quartet of Tyler King (So., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding), Sam Pelkey (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Delta), Stefan Sigrist (Fr.., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) and Michael Kordel (So., Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) finished second in 3:32.80.

The Buckeyes swept the 200-yard freestyle, with Alex Chen (Fr., Bowie, Md./DeMartha Catholic) hitting the wall first to record his first collegiate win in 1:43.48. Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) finished next in a time of 1:43.51. Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) rounded out the Top 3 in 1:45.11.

Ohio State swept the 100-yard individual medley, with Nate King (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) taking first in 52.17. Andrew Olson completed the sweep in 54.43. The men went 1-3 in the 50-yard freestyle. R.J. Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) captured the victory in 21.90 and Mike Kordel finished third in 22.30.

The men captured the Top 2 places in the 50-yard butterfly. Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) led the group in 22.13. Matthias Sigrist was the runner-up in 23.85. The Buckeyes' domination continued in the 100-yard freestyle. Jake Busch (So., Toledo, Ohio/Toledo Christian) stopped the clock first at 47.97. Andrew Olson (Fr., Allison Park, Penn/Hampton) (48.25) and Kordel (48.25) finished second and third, respectively.

Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothills) won the 50-yard backstroke in 24.00, with the rest of the men swimming the event as exhibition. Stefan Sigrist garnered a win in the 500-yard freestyle to claim his first collegiate victory. His time was 4:35.34. Sam Pelkey (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Delta) (27.24) won the final individual swim of the night in the 50-yard breaststroke.

Ohio State completed the meet with the fastest time of 1:23.88 in the 200-yard freestyle relay, but did not record points for the race, since the Buckeyes were competing solely in exhibition. The divers also did not count their points toward the final team score.

The men will remain in Iowa for a dual meet against Big Ten rival Iowa, Saturday at noon.
