ADAM PINE SETS U.S. OPEN RECORD IN 100 FLY; AMERICAN RECORD FOR NATE DUSING

Australian Adam Pine, a senior at Nebraska, set a U.S. Open mark in the 100 fly with his winning time of 51.23, bettering the 51.56 mark he had set in the morning. Third behind Nate Dusing of Texas and Zsolt Gaspar of South Carolina at the 50, Pine pulled ahead to win by over half a second. Dusing was second in 52.00, an American record, breaking Sabir Muhammad's 1999 mark of 52.25.
Pine isn't fully tapered because Australia's Olympic Trials are in May; he missed making the 1996 Olympic team by one place.
"I knew I was going to struggle a bit today, so I just tried to stay with them at the 50 and come from behind," he said.
South African Roland Schoeman of Arizona was third in 52.14 and Gaspar ended up fourth in 52.54.
Tom Hannan of Texas was fifth in 52.82, Auburn's Oswaldo Quevedo was sixth in 52.99, Bryan Jones of Texas was seventh in 53.07 and Auburn's Jeff Somensatto was eighth in 53.43. Marcin Kaczmarek of Central Connecticut State won the B final in 53.04.

Pine is last in the water, but first to finish the 100 Fly.
