Maine Teams Defeat Providence

ORONO, Maine, January 14. THE University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams hosted Providence on Sunday afternoon at Wallace Pool. The Maine women picked up a 186-92 win as they took first place in all but two events, while the men won 176-114. The Black Bears were led by Mimi Chovanec, Mackenzie Grobmyer, Tal Shpaizer, Nathan Richard and Chris Card, all of whom won two events each.

In the women's meet, Maine started off by taking first and second in the 200 medley relay. The Black Bears took the top two spots in the 1000 free, as Colleen Miller (Missoula, Montana) was first in 10:42.83 and Sarah Holmsten (Red Wing, Minn.) was second in 11:04.45. In the 200 free, Mimi Chovanec (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) took first place in 1:59.34 as Maine swept the top three places. Maine also took the top two spots in the 100 backstroke, led by Megan Wolters (Cleveland, Miss.) in 1:01.32. Meaghann Fisher (Carmel, Ind.) was second in the 100 breast.

In the 200 butterfly, Mackenzie Grobmyer (Charlottesville, Va.) won in 2:13.44. Tal Shpaizer (Shoham, Israel) won the 50 free in 25.79, while Lauren Viles (Oakland, Maine) was second in 26.01. Maine swept the top three spots in the 100 free, led by Heather Griffin (Presque Isle, Maine) in 56.41. Tal Shpaizer added a first place finish in the 200 back in 2:07.81, while Megan Wolters was second in 2:11.75.

In the 200 breast, Kiki O'Donnell (Hampden, Maine) was first in 2:34.86 and Mimi Chovanec won the 500 free in 5:15.22. Mackenzie Grobmyer won her second event of the day with a 1:01.17 finish in the 100 butterfly. Maine's 400 free relay also posted the fastest time of the day. In diving, Shannon Scott (Cumberland, Maine) was first in the one meter with 226.05 points and also first in the three meter with 234.60 points.

For the men, the Black Bears won the 200 medley relay to start the meet. In the 1000 free, Brendan Amy (South Portland, Maine) was second in 10:49.10. Cully Wakelin (Biddeford, Maine) was second in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.01 and second in the 100 butterfly in 58.11. Mike Goede (Omaha, Neb.) was second in the 100 back in 58.33.

Mike Goede added a first place finish in the 100 free in 51.38. Chris Card (West Bath, Maine) and Eric Palmer (Bangor, Maine) were first and second in the 100 breast, with times of 1:00.03 and 1:04.77, respectively. Nathan Richard (Vergennes, Vt.) won the 50 free in 22.19 and also won the 500 free in 5:11.04.

Chris Card won his second event of the day with a time of 2:15.87 in the 200 breast. Eric Palmer won the 200 IM in 2:08.87 and Chris Card was second in the event in 2:09.36. The 400 free relay anchored by Nathan Richard took first place. On the boards, Keith Burgie (Arundel, Maine) was first in the one meter with 280.70 points and also first in the three meter with 288.90 points.

The women's team will face New Hampshire on January 20, while both teams will compete at Boston College on January 26 and 27.
