Wayne State Teams Split with Calvin College

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan, January 14. THE Wayne State men's swimming and diving team earned its second dual meet victory of the weekend, defeating Calvin College, 143-90, in Grand Rapids on Saturday afternoon. The women suffered a narrow defeat to Calvin, losing 124-119.

Wayne State won nine of the first 11 events, including a one-two finish in the 200 medley relay.

The quartet of Cauli Bedran, Christer Tour, Bruno Blanco, and Tiago Oliveira won in a time of 1:33.49, followed by the combination of Luiz Pacheco, A.J. Erard, Alex Davidson, and Sebastian Rzepa in second (1:41.10).

Guilherme Veiga (16:16.61) and James Ekleberry (17:10.37) finished first and second, respectively, in the 1650 free, and Matt Leix won the 200 free in a time of 1:47.22.

Pacheco (22.36), Blanco (22.60), and Justin Shields (23.25) took second through fourth in the 50 free, while Erard (4:16.61) and Veiga (4:21.26) swam to finishes of first and second in the 400 individual medley.

Blanco (2:00.75), Jared Troyer (2:00.93), and Davidson (2:04.02) swept the top three spots in the 200 fly, as Leix (2:00.72) and Pacheco (2:02.69) went one-two in the 200 backstroke.

Cayce Bolt was victorious in both the one-meter (249.40) and three-meter (263.15) diving competitions.

Shields and Rzepa clinched the dual meet victory for Wayne State, finishing first (5:03.90) and third (5:06.19), respectively, in the 500 free.

Wayne State won five events in the meet, including Melissa Duff's first-place time of 18:13.20 in the 1650 free. Maggie Young finished second (18:37.44) and Whitney Baker third (19:09.76).

Ashley St. Andrew finished second in the 200 free (1:57.57, as did Julie Danaher in the 50 free (25.56).

In the 400 IM, Elaina Hogle turned in a first-place time of 4:36.63, while Laura Leix won the 200 fly in a time of 2:12.05 ahead of second-place Elena Crowley (2:18.08).

Hogle and Danaher took second (55.12) and third (55.49), respectively, in the 100 free, and Katie Harrigan won the 200 backstroke (2:13.46).

St. Andrew (5:12.14) and Duff (5:18.81) went one-two in the 500 free, and Jodi Scott finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:33.83).

In diving, Katie Rence finished second on both the one-meter (223.10) and three-meter (227.95) boards.

The meet came down to the 200 free relay, with the Warriors just coming up short in second place. The foursome of Danaher, Haintso Rakouth, St. Andrew, and Hogle posted a time of 1:41.22.

Wayne State will compete at Eastern Michigan on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
