No. 2 Stanford Men Defeat Arizona State on the Road

TEMPE, Arizona, January 13. ARIZONA State University's men's swimming and diving fell to No. 2 Stanford Saturday, 169-129 at ASU's Mona Plummer Aquatic Complex even though junior CJ Nuess topped his competition in all three individual events in which he competed, including a victory by nearly 25 seconds in the 1000 free and Micky Benedetti once again swept the day's diving events.

Nuess and junior Lucas Azevedo took first and second, respectively, in both the 1000 and 500 freestyle events, as Nuess recorded times of 9:16.78 (1000 free) and 4:30.57 (500 free), while Azevedo finished in 9:41.41 (1000 free) and 4:32.84 (500 free). Nuess completed his hat trick by out-swimming all others in the 400 IM, touching in 3:56.56. Sophomore Gal Nevo followed behind Nuess in the 400 IM, finishing in 4:00.13.

Freshman Ante Cvitkovic and junior Steve Neuwert also recorded first-place finishes against the Cardinal, as Cvitkovic completed the 100 back in 50.26 and Neuwert finished the 100 free in 45.58. Neuwert also placed second in the 50 free, touching in 20.50.

Redshirt freshman diver Micky Benedetti continued his impressive streak of performances, recording the day's best scores in the 1-meter (347.93) and 3-meter (371.18) diving events.

Nevo and sophomore Sean Boyle also enjoyed high-scoring finishes, as Nevo placed second in the 200 free (1:42.27), as did Boyle in the 100 fly (49.72). Nevo also scored in the 200 back.

Adding to ASU's scoring total were freshman Marin Naranca in the 100 and 200 free, freshman Max Laney in the 100 back, junior Will Weeks in the 100 breast and 200 back, junior Jake Fischer in the 100 breast, junior John Dwelley in the 100 fly and junior Brandon Pierson in the 400 IM.

Saturday's meet wraps up the Sun Devils' home schedule of the 2006-07 season, and ASU will finish the regular season at Arizona on Feb. 3.
