Louisville Women Top Cincinnati, 141-90, Men Fall, 121-102

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky, January 13. THE University of Louisville women's and men's swimming split with visiting Cincinnati in BIG EAST Conference action Saturday afternoon in Ralph Wright Natatorium. The women won 141-90 with the men being edged 121-102.

"As a conference rivalry, this is always an exciting meet. Our women have shown themselves to be knocking on the door of the Top 25. It was really an inspired performance as we dominated our opponent today," said U of L head coach Arthur Albiero. "On the men's side, there were some great individual efforts but certainly as a team we fell short today."

To start the meet, U of L women took the 400-medley relay when the A-relay team of Karen Criss, Heather Meng, Jenny Schimenti and Anna Dishuck finished first. Cincinnati was second but the Cardinal's B-relay touched third for additional points. The Cardinal men A-relay of Peyton Bobo, Vali Preda, Rafal Kuchta and Carlos Van Isschot lost by one one-hundreth of a second with a time of 3:24.92.

Ashley Jackson took first with a time of 10:23.14 with Abby Miller taking third in 10:37.04 for the Cardinals in the grueling 1000-free. Cincinnati's Paola Rivas touched second with a time of 10:24.61 In the men's 1000-free, UC's Jeremy Peter took the race handily with a time of 9:40.70 followed by U of L's Anthony Mason, who touched second with a time of 9:52.16. John Bell scooted in for third place points with a time of 10:09.42.

In the women's 200-free, Melanie Greyling and Liz Halet swept the top two spots for U of L, UC's Alex Dole was third to score for the Bearcats. In the men's race, Steve Wood and Bjorn Mates took the top two spots in the 200-free with times of 1:42.84 and 1:42.91 for a Bearcat sweep. Carlos Van Isschot touched third in 1:44.37.

In the meet's fastest race, Cincinnati took the women's 50-free, with Gerdien de Jong surging to first with a time of 24.04. U of L took the next three spots led by Anna Dishuck's 24.13, Rebecca Clark and Emily Rabe turned in times of 24.80 and 24.96 respectively. For the men, it was UC's Marcel Kleiner, Josh Schneider, Sergiu Daghid was the top finisher for U of L turning in a time of 21.77.

In the women's 200-IM, Leslie Van Winkle set a new pool record with a first place finish in 2:04.82. Cincinnati's Randi Vogel finished in 2:08.69 followed by U of L's Heather Meng's third place. She just edged teammate Jenny Schimenti who touched at 2:10.27.

"Leslie is back in the mix and as the defending BIG EAST Champion, she showed that today," said Albiero.

On the one meter board, Robbie Lewis, who was the only male diver, took first place points with a score of 322.20, a pool record. U of L's Marianne Bradford won for the women with a pool record score of 296.70. Sarah Sandroni was third with 279.90.

"Robbie dove very well. He came back from being a bit sick this week and was real relaxed and set a school record," said U of L head diving coach Mike Zehnder. "Marianne set a school record too. Her winter training really paid off and she was very consistent. She didn't miss a dive."

In the 200-fly, Abby Miller held off teammate Jenny Schimenti and Amanda Henleben for first. UC's top finisher, Elinore deJong, was fifth. For the men, newcomer Rafal Kuchta took first with a tem of 1:53.41. UC's Jakub Carda was second (1:55.99) and Ryan Wietzel took third (1:58.99). U of L's Luke Wakefield finished fourth for the Cards to round out the scoring.

In the 100-free, Anna Dishuck took first with a time of 52.03. Leslie Van Winkle was in hot pursuit with a time of 52.29 and UC's Gerdien de Jong was third at 53.02. For the men, Marcel Kleiner won the race for the Bearcats with a time of 46.22. U of L's Carlos Van Isschot was second with a time of 46.64.

For the 200-back, U of L women took all but the top spot. UC's Randi Vogel took first with a time of 2:06.67. For the Cardinals, Karen Criss, Larissa Niehoff and Alana Berrocal took the next three spots. For the men, UC took the top three spots led by Bjoern Mates (1:51.27), who was followed by Shea Walkley, Daniel Goldberg, U of L's Peyton Bobo and Gavin Mittel were the top two finishers for the Cardinals.

For the women's 500-free, Paola Rivas won first place points with a time of 5:10.27. Melanie Greyling turned in the best time of 5:03.49 in an exhibition swim. In the men's 500-free, UC's Jakub Carda was first (4:45.59) followed by U of L's Rafal Kuchta (4:46.03) and Anthony Mason (4:47.92) touching second and third respectively. The Bearcats' Steve Wood was fourth with a time of 4:51.35.

On the 3-meter board, Robbie Lewis won with a score of 308.33. For the women, U of L's Sarah Sandroni won with a score of 269.86 with McKenzie Long next at 257.63 and Marianne Bradford was third with 228.46.

"Sarah Sandroni dove very well with good consistency and made her conference qualifying mark," said Zehnder.

In the women's 200-breast, Heather Meng had the fastest time of 2:21.33 in exhibition, but UC's Annelie Jonsson scored first place points. In the men's race, U of L's Vali Preda won easily with a time of 2:04.70, Jeremy Peter was second at 2:07.96 and Steve Marshall took third for the Bearcats with a time of 2:08.02.

"As a leader, Heather is a senior and our captain and she has continued her great season with top performances on the relay teams as well as her individual events," said Albiero.

In final race, the 400-free relay, the Cards A-relay of Rebecca Clark, Liz Halet, Karen Criss and Melanie Greyling finished first with a time of 3.32.64. The UC's B relay was second and Cardinals B-relay was third. For the men, the Cardinal's A-Relay set a pool record with a time of 3:11.70. Cincinnati B relay was second.
