Pittsburgh Women Take Quad Meet

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania, January 13. AT the end of a two-day quad meet it was the ladies of Pitt who found themselves on top. Senior Kristin Brown won two events with NCAA `B' qualifying times and led the Pitt women's swimming and diving team to victories over Maryland (185-161), Richmond (216-136) and Villanova (214-138). The Panthers improve to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Big East.

Picking up where they left off last night, the Panthers quickly jumped out with first-place finishes. Winning the first event of the day was Brown (East Berlin, Pa./Bermundian Springs), who recorded a time of 4:53.70 in the 500 free. Later, Brown won the 200 free with a time of 1:50.17. Both times qualified for NCAA `B' cut times.

Brown was also the lead leg of the 400 free relay that stopped the clock at 3:26.29 for a first-place finish. The remaining members of the team were sophomore Stacie Safritt (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley), freshman Lisa McDonnell (Columbia, Pa./Hempfield) and senior Andrea Shoust (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont./White Pines C & VS).

Shoust continued to set the standard for the Panthers in the 200 back, as she finished first with a time of 2:02.42. Freshman Ryann Kishbaugh (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) trailed for second in the same event with a time of 2:05.63.

As the lead leg for Pitt's 400 medley relay team, Shoust and the Panthers finished second with a time of 3:51.56. Shoust was joined by sophomore Ruth Seiffert (Boothwyn, Pa/Garnet Valley, junior Brittany Stevens (Peachtree City, Ga./Starr Mill's/Florida State) and Safritt on that relay.

Other top-three finished for Pitt included junior Kelly O'Hara (Voorhees, N.J./Timber Creek), who finished second in the 50 free (23.99), while Safritt finished third in the 50 free (24.26). Then in 3M diving, freshman Hanna Bratton (Lincoln, R.I./Moses Brown School) placed second with 230.25 points and Seiffert finished third in the 200 IM (2:08.23).

The Panthers return to Trees Pool on Saturday, Jan. 27, when they host Virginia Tech. Diving begins at 11 a.m. and swimming events follow at noon.
