Ohio State Women Beat Marshall, 148-86

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 13. OHIO State women's swimming and diving team claimed its second consecutive dual-meet win, defeating Marshall, 148-86, at the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion Friday. The Buckeyes swam the fastest time in every event. Ohio State also captured the Top 2 places in every event until the women opted to swim the final three events as exhibition.

Ohio State recorded its first win of the night in the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Jill Lockhart (Fr., Munice, Ind./Yorktown), Erin Church (Jr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy), Gulsah Gunenc (Sr., Edirne, Turkey/Edirne Anatolian) and Griet Buelens (Jr., Kapelle-Op-Den-Bos, Belgium/Ursuline Academy) swam a combined time of 3:52.55, beating Marshall by almost 10 seconds.

Stasia von Rahl (So., Mishawka, Ind./St. Joseph's) picked up her first victory of the season in the 1,000-yard freestyle in a time of best time of 10:30.33. It was the first time Von Rhal's first swam the event this year. Sarah Krone (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Ursuline Academy) and Katie Chute (Fr., Columbus, Ohio/Anderson) touched next to complete the sweep for Ohio State in the distance event. Krone recorded a time of 10:34.33, while Chute finished the race in 10:45.30.

The Buckeyes continued the sweep of the Top 3 into the next event when Buelens touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:51.38. Haley Mitchell (Fr., Walled Lake, Mich./Walled Lake Western) finished next in 1:56.13. Farriss Blaskovits (Fr., Nepean, Ontario/Mother Theresa) completed the sweep in 1:57.46. Ohio State continued its dominance in the 50-yard freestyle, with Elaine Chan (So., Hong Kong China/Hupp Yenn) stopping the clock first in 24.24. Annie Rennenbom (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) earned silver in a time of 25.21 and Christina Sarnecki rounded out the podium in 25.31.

Linda Lund (Jr., Roennede, Denmark/Haslev.) and Sam Johnson (Jr., Cleveland, Ohio/Hawken) went 1-2 in the 200-yard individual medley. Lund swam the event in a season-best time of 2:08.41, while Johnson completed the race in 2:11.05. Lund picked up her second win of the meet, claiming the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 58.01. Sarah Krone finished in 59.97 to place second. Teammate Courtney Brayman (So., Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) posted a time of 1:00.50 for third.

Lockhart won the 100-yard freestyle for the first time this season in 53.30. Von Rahl and Sarnecki completed the medal positions, with respective times of 54.64 and 55.62. Gulsah Gunenc and Elaine Chan, the only two swimmers competing for Ohio State in the 100-yard backstroke, garnered a 1-2 finish in the event. Gunenc hit the wall first in 58.38, with Chan following behind in 59.96.

Despite choosing to swim the remaining events as exhibition, Ohio State swam the three fastest times in the 500-yard freestyle. Haley Mitchell (5:01.82) swam her fastest dual-meet time of the season. Marshall swimmer Ashley McIlvain picked up Marshall's first win in 5:17.14. Micheala Sceli earned another victory for Marshall when she stopped the clock at 1:06.24. Colleen Schweitzer (Fr., Highlands Park, Colo./Highlands Ranch) was Ohio State's fastest swimmer with a time of swam 1:05.07.

The divers had a successful showing, claiming the Top 2 positions in both diving events. Chelsea Davis (So., Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) claimed both diving titles for the second straight weekend, scoring 281.95 on the 1-meter and 311.10 on the 3-meter. Kati Bell (Fr., Cincinnati, Ohio/Graham School) picked up two silver medals, scoring 242.70 on the 1-meter and 272.55 on the 3-meter.

Marsahll claimed the final event of the meet in the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:45.86. The Ohio State team of Buelens, Chan, Lockhart and Von Rahl swam the fastest time of 3:30.04 in the relay to conclude the meet.

"We swam so much better than we did last weekend," Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. "We had some role-players step up tonight. It was great to see people swim some off-events and do really well in them. I am really please with how we swam tonight."
