Czene Ties 200 I.M. World Record

Arizona State freshman Atilla Czene, from Hungary, tied the world record in the 200 I.M. with a 1:54.65, matching the 1994 mark by Jani Sievinen of Finland.
Texas junior Nate Dusing led for the first 100, on world record pace, with Czene passing him and taking the lead by over a second and a half after the breaststroke. Dusing finished second in 1:56.84 with Georgia senior Beau Wiebel third in 1:57.86.
Czene, the 1996 Olympic champion and the 1992 Olympic bronze medalist in the 200 I.M., joined the Arizona State team in January.
Kevin Clements of Auburn was fourth in 1:58.06, Steven Brown of Stanford fifth in 1:58.52, Joe Montague of Texas sixth in 1:59.32, Zane DeWitz of Tennessee seventh in 1:59.49 and Jeffrey Somensatto of Auburn eighth in 2:01.09. Tamas Kerekjarto of Southern Cal won the consolation final in 1:58.23.
