College Season Returns With A Vengeance

PHOENIX, Arizona, January 8. WITH the first solid weekend of collegiate action of 2007 put to bed, plenty of teams proved themselves ready to go after holiday training.

Here is how the CSCAA Top 10 fared:

Women
1. Stanford: The Cardinal had the weekend off, but will return to action with a battle against No. 2 Arizona on Jan. 12.

2. Arizona: The Wildcats opened 2007 with success when they downed Oregon State (189-97) and Northern Arizona (184-105).

3. Auburn: Auburn, which had the weekend off, will next compete in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week against Texas on Jan. 11.

4. California: The Golden Bears will not start the spring semester until Jan. 12 at Arizona State.

5. Texas A&M: The Aggies maintained their incredible fall semester momentum with a convincing 123-76 win over the Miami Hurricanes on Jan. 5.

6. Florida State: The Seminoles moved to 7-0 on the year by beating UNC-Wilmington (140-89) and North Florida (143-83) on Jan. 6.

7. Georgia: The Bulldogs improved to 7-1 on the season with a big 170.5-123.5 win over No. 8 SMU on Jan. 6.

8. Southern Methodist: The Mustangs missed a chance for a statement victory over No. 7 Georgia in their 170.5-123.5 loss on Jan. 6.

9. Florida: The Gators, taking the weekend off, open their spring semester with a meet against Virginia on Jan. 12.

10. Michigan: The Wolverines have another week off before returning to competition next weekend by hosting the Michigan Invitational.

Men
1. Texas: The top-ranked Longhorns start of the second half of their season with a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week against No. 3 Auburn on Jan. 11.

2. Stanford: Stanford, which took the weekend off, will be back in action with a Pac-10 tilt against No. 6 Arizona on Jan. 12.

3. Auburn: The four-time defending NCAA champions, who did not compete this weekend, will next battle top-ranked Texas in a SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week on Jan. 11.

4. California: Cal suffered its first loss to Arizona in 14 years in a 124-118 defeat on Jan. 5, before taking out No. 12 Michigan, 173-127, on Jan. 6. The Golden Bears also downed hosting Arizona State in the tri-meet on Jan. 6.

5. Southern California: The Trojans pushed their record to 5-0 with their final competition in the friendly confines of McDonald's Swim Stadium in Los Angeles. USC swam past UC Santa Barbara (141-118) on Jan. 6, after knocking off Washington (119-86) on Jan. 5 without the use of any seniors, who had the day off.

6. Arizona: The Wildcats enjoyed a statement weekend against No. 4 California (124-118) and No. 12 Michigan (122-121). The win against the Golden Bears proved to the first for Arizona in 14 years.

7. Minnesota: The Golden Gophers competed in the Hawaii Invitational on Jan. 7, but results were unavailable at press time.

8. Northwestern: The Wildcats, who did not compete this weekend, start their spring semester with the Dallas Morning News Invite next weekend.

9. Georgia: The Bulldogs have one more week to wait before hosting Texas in a showdown of ranked squads.

10. Florida State: The Seminoles kept up their breakout season to move to 4-0 after a 130-89 win over UNC-Wilmington on Jan. 6. In the triumph, freshman Terry Horner broke both Seminole one-meter and three-meter diving school records.
