Seattle Takes Home Logger Classic Title

TACOMA, Washington, January 7. THE Seattle University swimmers combined to earn first place honors in 19 of 26 events at the Logger Classic, hosted by the University of Puget Sound Saturday afternoon. The University of the Redlands also competed in the invitational along with Seattle and Puget Sound.

Doug Djang (Seattle, Wash.) won three of the 13 men's events, finishing first in the 50 meter freestyle (24.62), the 100 meter breaststroke (1:06.72), and the 200 meter breaststroke (2:28.44). Bryson Chiu (Carmel, Ind.) picked up first-place finishes in the 400 meter individual medley (4:51.69) and the 100 meter backstroke (1:02.60) as well as a second place finish in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:30.20).

Juniors Chris Coley (Austin, Texas) and Gordon Smith (Kennewick, Wash.) also earned two wins in the meet. Coley finished first in the 100 meter butterfly (59.26) and the 200 meter butterfly (2:18.92), while Smith earned top honors in the 800 meter freestyle (8:44.37) and the 200 meter freestyle (2:01.71).

Nathan Freeman (Phoenix, Ariz.) won the 400 meter freestyle (4:15.88), and Bryant Bevers (Federal Way, Wash.) was victorious in the 100 meter freestyle (55.02) as the Seattle men won 11 of 13 events in the meet. Andrew Miron (Billings, Mont.) and Evan Rydinski (Seattle, Wash.) earned two second-place finishes each during the afternoon.

On the women's side, Kristie Rice (Des Moines, Wash.) finished first in the 400 meter individual medley (5:15.24) and the 200 meter breaststroke (2:47.61), plus earned a second-place finish in the 100 meter breaststroke (1:20.14). Christina Hunsberger (Bellevue, Wash.) also won two events: the 400 meter freestyle (4:46.21) and the 800 meter freestyle (9:45.82).

Seniors Lindsey Gall (Chehalis, Wash.) and Erin Matthew (Bremerton, Wash.) earned two top-two finishes in the meet. Gall finished second in the 50 meter freestyle (28.36), but then came back to win the 100 meter butterfly (1:05.24). Matthew won the 100 meter breaststroke (1:18.09), and then earned a second-place finish in the 200 meter breaststroke (2:47.92), just 3/10ths of a second behind Rice.

Sarah Shannon (Issaquah, Wash.) was victorious in the 200 meter individual medley (2:32.77), and Alex Weiss (Reno, Nev.) earned first place honors in the 200 meter backstroke (2:31.84). Sophomore transfer Alison Colnon (Seattle, Wash.) put together a solid performance, finishing second in both the 400 meter freestyle (4:50.51) and the 800 meter freestyle (10:04.95).

With the meet between Seattle University and Cal Baptist originally scheduled for next Friday at the Connolly Center cancelled, the Seattle swim teams do not compete again until Saturday, Jan. 20, against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, B.C., Canada, beginning at 1 p.m.
