UC Davis Has Strong Showing at Aggie Open

DAVIS, California, January 6. FOR the first time since November both UC Davis swimming teams were in action at the same time as they hosted the 2007 Aggie Open at the Schaal Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. Sheeva Ghanbari, Andrius Urbaitis, Russell Taylor and Scott Weltz enjoyed the most success at the event as they all won multiple events.

Ghanbari put together one of the best meets of her collegiate career with victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and 50 freestyle. Her time of 1:09.43 in the 100 breast is six seconds faster than her previous season-best while her wining time of 24.42 in the 50 free betters her previous season-high by almost two seconds.

Urbaitis won his two events in the span of about 15 minutes as he jumped from winning the 400 individual medley in a season-best 4:25.98 to taking the top spot in the 100 back (55.32) just four events later.

Weltz continues to put together another outstanding season for the men's team as he returned in his first competition since November to claim wins in the 100 breast (59.40), 100 butterfly (50.46) and the 200 breast (2:06.84). Both of his winning times were top times for him this season.

Taylor opened the men's events with a victory in the 100 free as he touched the pad in 47.41. He returned at the end of the day to capture another win, this time with a time of 1:57.89 in the 200 IM. Taylor also finished second in the 100 breast (1:00.04) and fourth in the 100 fly (52.84). With the exception of the 100 breast, all three times were season-bests for Taylor.

Former Aggie great Yuka Kobayashi returned to Schaal and took the top prize in the 100 fly (59.65) and 100 back (1:00.18). Her victory in those events came as no surprise to Aggie swimming fans as she still holds school records in both events.

UC Davis swimming is back in action next weekend as they jump into Big West competition for the first time this season with a road meet against UC Santa Barbara at noon on Saturday.
