Victorian Championships Open First Day in Melbourne

MELBOURNE, Australia, January 4. DURING the first day of competition at the 2007 Victorian Swimming Championships held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Center, Kristen Wilson, Talia Goddard and Patrick Murphy walked away with gold medals.

Additionally, Tarryn McGaw, Daniel Bell and Bryce Glover won multi-disability events.

Women's 200 Butterfly
17-year-old Kristen Wilson of the Haileybury Waterlions claimed gold in the 200 fly with a time of 2:15.01 to best 13-year-old Zhao Zihan of China, who touched in 2:16.37. Liu Zige, a 17-year-old from China, placed third in 2:16.76.

Women's 400 IM
Talia Goddard of Carey Aquatics took the title in 4:52.26, while Kristen Wilson snared her second medal with a second-place time of 4:53.42. Chelsea Carpenter of the Ivanhoe Neons finished third in 5:00.30.

Men's 200 Freestyle
Patrick Murphy won gold in the 200 free with a time of 1:49.13, which was less than a second off his personal best time posted at the Australian team selection trials last month. Ken Welsh finished just behind in 1:51.65, while Michael Papaioannou took bronze in 1:53.60.

Multi-Disability Events
17-year-old Tarryn McGaw won the women's 100 free in 1:06.53 and the women's 50 back in 36.15. Meanwhile, Daniel Bell took the men's 100 back in 1:08.76, while Bryce Glover won the men's 50 breast in 32.79.
