Hayley Lewis Shows Form In Aussie Open Water Champs

Sydney, Australia – Dual Olympian and former middle distance champion, Haley Lewis showed good form to win her first Australian Open Water title over the 5km distance. Lewis has been quietly on the comeback trail for the past twelve months training with Kieren Perkins under veteran coach John Carew with the aim to qualify for her third Olympics in the 400m and 800m freestyle.

Mark Saliba, the current unrivaled champion of men's open water swimming in Australia, took out both the 5km and 25km events. Bronwen Whitehead, the silver medalist over 5km at the 1998 World Championships won the women's 25km event.

Both Lewis and Perkins will compete at the Miami Club carnival on Queensland's Gold Coast this weekend alongside several of the best middle distance swimmers in the world. This should prove a great trial for the Denis Cotterell coached swimmers Grant Hackett, Daniel Kowalski, Japanese Masato Hirano and surf lifesaving champion Ky Hurst with the Australian Olympic trials only six weeks away.
