Mountain Brook, Bob Jones Split Alabama State High School Titles

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama, December 18. OVER the weekend of Dec. 8-9, the Alabama High School Athletic Association awarded its boys and girls state titles. Mountain Brook High grabbed the girls title with 211 points, while Bob Jones High took home the boys title with 312.5 points.

Team Scores
In the girls meet, Bob Jones High finished second place with 205 points, while St. Paul's Episcopal High took third with 187 points. Vestavia Hills High (154) and Grissom High (149) placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the boys side, Huntsville High placed second with 199 points, while Mountain Brook High (145) and Hoover High (144) finished third and fourth, respectively. Prattville High rounded out the top five with 124.5 points.

Girls Individual Results
One state record fell in the girls meet when Lamp High sophomore Laura Johnson started the meet off with a state-record time of 2:06.23 in the 200 IM. Later on, she doubled up her titles with a 1:04.35 in the 100 breast.

Bob Jones High junior Jenny Vonjouanne provided the other two-title performance with wins in the 50 free (23.57) and the 100 free (52.09).

In diving action, Briarwood High junior Mary Catherine Cochran won the one-meter contest with 375.70 points.

Boys Individual Results
Three state records fell during the men's portion of the meet.

The Bob Jones High foursome of Derek Gore, Daniel Armstrong, Joe Berry and Ben Fogg set a state record in the 200 medley relay by touching in 1:38.46. The BJHS quartet of Fogg, Russell Johnson, George Wong and Armstrong also broke the state record in the 200 free relay with a clocking of 1:28.17.

Armstrong, a senior, went on to break the state standard in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.62. He went on to double up his winnings with a triumph in the 100 back (52.60).

Opelika High sophomore Sam Kiefer went back-to-back with wins in the 50 free (21.95) and 100 fly (51.61). The last two-time winner came in the form of Hillcrest High junior Armin Hornikel, who touched first in the 100 free (47.84) and the 100 breast (58.63).

Mountain Brook High junior Lee Hollingsworth won the one-meter diving event with 352.55 points.
