Cielo Breaks 100 Free South American Mark During First Day of Brazilian Championships

VITORIA, Brazil, December 14. DURING the initial day of competition at the Brazilian Swimming Championships held in Vitoria, Brazil, Cesar Cielo broke a six-year-old South American record in the men's 100 free to provide the top highlight of the day.

Women's 50 Backstroke
Fabiola Pulga Molina took home gold in the sprint back with a time of 29.75. Fernanda Nunes Alvarenga placed second in 31.10, while Kariny Silva Ribeiro earned bronze in 31.27.

Men's 50 Backstroke
In the men's edition of the sprint back, Daniel Orzechowski took home the title in 26.68. Glauber Henrique Silva snared silver in 26.72 just behind, while Leonardo Sumida placed third in 26.91 in a tight 1-2-3 finish.

Women's 100 Freestyle
Flavia Delaroli-Cazziolato scored gold in 56.19 to touch in front of second-place Renata de Oliveira Burgos' 56.53. Tatiana Lemos Barbosa closed out the top three in 56.83.

Men's 100 Freestyle
Cesar Cielo broke a six-year-old South American record in the men's 100 free by touching in 48.61 for the national title. That effort nipped the previous standard of 48.69 set by Fernando Scherer on Aug. 2, 1998.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Cesar Oliveira took second in 49.71, while Rodrigo Rocha Castro finished third in 50.44.

Women's 200 Breaststroke
Veruska Clednev snagged the gold medal in the 200 breast with a 2:37.42 clocking to hold off second-place Tatiane Mayumi Sakemi's 2:37.93. Juliana Marangoni Marin closed out the podium in 2:41.32.

Men's 200 Breaststroke
Thiago Parravicini cruised in for the 200 breast title in 2:16.18, while Fernando Biazzoto took second in 2:17.50. Tales Rocha Cerdeira placed third in 2:18.47.

Women's 200 IM
Joanna Maranhao claimed gold in 2:19.34, while Lilian de Paula Cerroni hit the wall in 2:21.61 for second place. Livia Carvalho dos Santos rounded out the top three in 2:22.66.

Men's 200 IM
Fernando Souza da Silva pocketed gold by stopping the clock in 2:03.58, while Lucas Salatta placed second in 2:04.84. Meanwhile, Diogo de Oliveira Yabe took bronze in 2:05.37.

Men's 1500 Freestyle
Armando Negreiros won the distance free in 15:29.12, while Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca scored silver in 15:32.68. Conrado Chede wound up in third in 15:48.43.
