Ohio State Adds Seven Women Recruits

COLUMBUS, Ohio, December 7. THE Ohio State women's swimming and diving team has signed seven student-athletes for the 2007-08 season, including two from Ohio. Swimmers Emily Simpson, Anita Beck, Katelyn Brix, Samantha Cheverton, and Maggie O'Brian, as well as divers Bianca Alvarez and Kristen Asman signed a National Letter of Intent during the early signing period.

"I am really excited about this group," Jeanne Fleck, head swimming coach, said. "It is the best class I have ever signed. They are very spread out in what they swim – sprint, distance, strokes – we got the gamete. I am excited because we got two great Ohio girls. It is just a really strong class."

Simpson, a senior from Dayton, Ohio, will join the team as an All-American in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. She was the runner-up at the 2005 Ohio high school state meet in the 200-yard freestyle. As a freshman, Simpson was named the conference MVP for her performances in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle. She also was named to the Junior First Team all-conference her freshman and sophomore years, during which she placed in the Top 3 at the state meet in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle.

Beck, of Cincinnati, Ohio, will join the Buckeyes as a three-time Ohio high school state champion. While at Anderson High School, she was an All-American in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, as well as the 400-yard freestyle relay. Beck won the 200-yard freestyle her junior year, and 500-yard freestyle both her sophomore and junior years. Swimming on her club team, the Anderson Barracudas, Beck was a finalist at the YMCA national meet for three years.

Brix, a native of Brentwood, Calif., has qualified for Senior Nationals in the 400-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke. A member of the 400-yard medley record-breaking relay, she also holds the 100-yard breaststroke record at Liberty High School. Brix is a 2003, 2004 and 2005 All-American for the 200-yard individual medley and 500-yard freestyle.

Cheverton comes to Ohio State from Montreal, Canada, as a Canadian senior national-level swimmer. She competed at the 2004 Canadian Olympic Trials, the 2005 Canadian World Aquatic Trials and the 2005 Canadian Commonwealth Games Trials. Most recently, Cheverton competed at the 2006 Canadian Pan Pacific Trials, where she finished seventh in the 400-meter individual medley and eighth in the 400-meter freestyle. In 2005, she was selected to compete at the Canada Games as a member of the Quebec team. This year, Cheverton was chosen for the Canadian Junior team, which will compete at the 2007 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii.

O'Brien, of Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Ill., joins the Buckeyes as an 11-time high school All-American for the 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. As a freshman, she was a state finalist in each of those events. As a senior, O'Brien finished fourth in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at the Illinois state meet, breaking the school record in the 50-yard distance. In 2004, she qualified to compete at U.S. Open. This year, she swam at Senior Nationals in March and U.S. Open in December.

Coming to Ohio State from Miami, Fla., Alvarez is the 2006 Junior National Champion on the 1-meter springboard. She also is a member of the 2006 Junior World Team. Alvarez is a two-time All-American diver, as well as a two-time champion at the East National championships and two-time Florida high school state champion. In 2006, she was named the most outstanding female athlete of the year at Miami Sunset High School. Joining Alvarez on the diving team is Asman of Columbus, Ohio. Asman has been a state finalist for Fort Hayes High School three times. She also is a five-time Junior Olympic National qualifier.
