Miami Women, Denison Men Win Miami Invite

OXFORD, Ohio, December 2. MIAMI University's women's swimming and diving team ran away with the Miami Invitational, racking up 1873.5 points in the three-day meet. Truman State was the RedHawks' closest competition, scoring 1452.5 points to place second, while Denison finished third with 1200 points. Oakland (1159.5), Cincinnati (1044), Emory (821), Houston (714.5), Wright State (610), Marshall (554), Cleveland State (237) and Wisconsin-Milwaukee (134) rounded out the scoring for the meet. Miami's men held steady finishing in fifth place with 1,048 points. Denison won the men's competition with 1,779.5 points, while Oakland University (1,477) and Wright State University (1,218) rounded out the top three finishers. Emory University placed fourth (1,183) in front of Miami, followed by Cleveland State in sixth (903.5), the University of Cincinnati in seventh (840.5) and Truman State (798.5) in eighth. The University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin, which only brought its divers to the meet, tallied 106 points.

Miami's 200 medley "A" relay team of sophomore Malarie Schmidt, freshman Karen Frazier, sophomore Allison Stevens and senior Margaret Patrick posted a time of 1:45.22 to place first, while the RedHawks' "B" relay team of sophomore Tenley Marsteller, junior Kristen Bezier, freshman Allison Way and senior Diana Zeleznikar recorded a time of 1:47.49 to finish sixth in the 200 medley relay event.

In the 200 backstroke, Miami had three swimmers place in the "B" Finals, led by Schmidt's 10th-place finish in a time of 2:08.69. She was followed by sophomore Alyson Schmidt's 14th-place finish and Marsteller's 16th-place finish.

Senior Ashley Seymour led the RedHawks in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in a time of 5:03.46 to finish in third place, while sophomore Jennifer Flaherty clocked a time of 5:07.90 to finish. Miami had two RedHawks finish among the top four in the 100 butterfly with Stevens turning in a time of 56.66 to finish second and junior Kathryn Stephens touching the wall in 56.72 to finish fourth.

With a time of 2:19.66, freshman Karen Frazier finished third for the RedHawks in the 200 breastroke. Sophomore Paige Iversen clocked in with a time of 2:22.17 to finish in fifth place in the event. Stevens led the RedHawks in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 52.01 to finish in fifth place, while sophomore Jennifer Nemeth recorded a time of 52.79 to finish in eighth place.

Frazier led a trio of Miami swimmers in the "A" finals of the 200 IM, clocking a time of 2:07.49 to win the event. Schmidt recorded a time of 2:08.98 to place fourth, while Seymour touched the wall in 2:09.08 to finish in fifth place.

With a final score of 253.35, freshman diver Kelsey Anagnos edged her nearest competition by 1.6 points to capture the 1-meter diving event. Three other RedHawks placed among the top eight with sophomore Melissa Roemmele placing fourth (240.50), freshman Rachel Smith placing sixth (222.00) and sophomore Alex Enriquez finishing eighth (232.40).

In the 400 freestyle relay, Miami's team of Stevens, Nemeth, Patrick and Bezier notched a time of 3:28.52 to place seconds, while the team of Stephens, Zeleznikar, Way and Schmidt finished in sixth place in a time of 3:32.21.

For the men, in the 200 medley relay, Miami's team of freshman Matt Grubb, senior Theo Kuczek, junior Andy Amyot and junior Ryan McHugh clocked a time of 1:34.25 to finish in seventh place. Junior Nick DuPuis was the lone RedHawk in the "A" Finals of the 200 backstroke. DuPuis finished in a time of 1:55.62 to finish place ninth.

Sophomore Scott DuCharme paced Miami in the "B" Finals of the 500 freestyle, placing 14th in a time of 4:45.96. In the "B" Finals of the 100 butterfly, Amyot posted a 10th-place finish in a time of 50.90 to lead the RedHawks.

Senior Griffin Marshall clocked a time of 2:07.29 in the 200 breaststroke to finish in eighth place for the RedHawks. In the 100 freestyle, McHugh paced the Red and White with a seventh-place finish in a time of 46.36.

In the "B" finals of the 200 IM, sophomore Chase Mortimer finished in 15th place in a time of 1:57.37.

Posting a score of 276.55 and edging his nearest competition by 2.25 points, sophomore diver Chris Heaton captured the 3-meter diving event for the RedHawks, while senior Eric Teske placed eighth with a score of 226.60. For Heaton, it was asweep of the 1- and 3-meter boards at the Miami Invitational.

Closing out the meet was Miami's "A" relay team of Zach Siegel, Kuczek, junior Paul Ricard and McHugh placed fifth in the 400 freestyle relay, touching the wall with a time of 3:07.05. Miami's "B" relay team also finished 10th in the event.
