SummaCare Second Day in the Book at Akron

AKRON, Ohio, December 2. DAY two of the SummaCare Invitational saw seven meet records fall during the finals, and the University of Akron swimming and diving team increased its lead to 99 points over Ohio with 899.5 points heading into tomorrow.

Sophomore Katie Carter (Euclid, Ohio/Euclid HS) established a new meet record in women's 3-meter diving with 318.85 points, marking her fifth straight meet with a victory in 3-meter diving.

Freshman Kendall Karchner (Maumee, Ohio/Maumee HS) clocked in the second-best time in school history in the 100 yard backstroke, tapping the wall in 57.70. Michelle Thomas (2001-2003) holds the record of 57.00, accomplishing that feat at the MAC Championship meet during her junior year.

The Zips started the nightcap displaying a mixture of youth and experience as freshman Karchner, senior Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio/Hoover HS), senior Danielle Beland (Ottawa, Ontario/St. Peters HS) and freshman Stephanie Zielinski (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan HS) recorded a season-best time in the 200 medley relay, clocking in at 1:48.40 to earn a second-place finish overall.

The UC Davis tandem of Jennifer Ginsberg, Ashley Cayford, Hannah Watanabe and Emily Medved bested the Zips in the 200 medley relay, setting a new meet record with a mark of 1:46.49.

Beland remained perfect on the season in the 100 yard butterfly, taking top honors with a time of 57.26. Freshman Kylie Bombrys (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) clocked in a collegiate-best time in the 100 butterfly with a mark of 59.61.

Freshman Cathryn Collins (Hilton Head S.C./Hilton Head HS) finished with a time of 1:56.52 in the 200 yard free to win the B-Finals for Akron.

In the final women's event of the night freshman Lauren Parr (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson HS) partnered-up with Collins, Bombrys and Beland to post a season-best time of 7:47.22 in the 800 yard free relay, finishing in fifth overall.

Heidi Kucera of UC Davis set a new meet record in the 400 IM, tapping the wall in 4:28.05. Cayford, who was already a part of a new record in the 200 medley relay for the Aggies, returned to set a new meet and pool record in the 100 yard breaststroke, posting a mark of 1:03.48.

The Bobcats enter tomorrow's final day with 800.5 points, followed by Clarion (760.5), UC Davis (736), Illinois State (730.5), Buffalo (718.5), Duquesne (669.5), Xavier (528.5), Shippensburg (275.5) and Bloomsburg (262).

On the men's side Eric Bugby of Duquesne set a new meet and pool record in the 100 yard butterfly with time of 49.80. He later added another meet record in the 100 back with a mark of 50.12.

The Dukes relay team consisting of Scott Darwin, Ian Walsh, (Eric) Bugby and Mike Ley also broke the old pool and meet record in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:33.45.

Ohio leads the men's group with 908 points, followed by Clarion (865), Duquesne (835), Buffalo (819.5), Xavier (739), St. Bonaventure (715), Shippensburg (602.5) and Bloomsburg (256).
