Illini Sign Two

CHAMPAIGN, Illinois, December 2. UNIVERSITY of Illinois swimming and diving head coach Sue Novitsky announced two signings for the class of 2007 Friday. Rebecca DeSalle from Hinsdale, Ill., and Kasey Madden from Medina, Minn., will join the Illini in August of 2007.

Rebecca DeSalle (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) comes to the Illini as a four-year IHSA state qualifier and USA Swimming Speedo Sectional qualifier. DeSalle swam the 200 IM in state competition four times and swam the 100 breast three times. In addition, DeSalle has club experience with the Academy Bullets, coached by Bill Schalz, and is involved with Habitat for Humanity and Athletes Committed to Excellence.

"We are pleased to add Becca to the Illinois Swimming and Diving family," Novitsky said. "She will add strength and depth to both our breaststroke and individual medley groups. Becca is coming from a strong club environment and will come in with a good training base behind her. Becca is a good student who works well in a team environment, and we believe that she can continue to improve and make great contributions to the team at Illinois."

National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association All-American Kasey Madden (Medina, Minn./Wayzata) joins the Orange and Blue after a successful high school career at Wayzata and with the Mach 3 Flyers club team. Most recently, Madden helped her high school team to a fourth-place finish at the 2006 Minnesota State Meet. At the state meet, Madden swam on three relays, including the champion 200 free relay, second-place 200 medley relay and seventh-place 400 free relay. Madden also competed in soccer and gymnastics.

"We are excited to add Kasey to the incoming class of 2007," Novitsky said. "Kasey is very athletic and still very new to swimming; she has only been competing for four years. She has many characteristics that we look for in our student-athletes. Kasey is enthusiastic, competitive, hard-working and good-natured. She is going to be a terrific addition to our butterfly and sprint freestyle groups. We feel that she is on the upswing with her career and will continue to improve and learn while at Illinois."
