Nike Cup Continues at Kenyon

GAMBIER, Ohio, December 1. WITH two-thirds of the three-day Nike Cup Invitational in the books, the Kenyon College Ladies swim team is still very much in the title hunt. At the conclusion of Friday's session, Division I opponents Pennsylvania (589) and Kansas (550) held a slim lead over third-place Kenyon (536), while Johns Hopkins (146) dropped out of the picture. After jumping out to an early lead Thursday evening, the Kenyon College men's swim team fell to second place with 522.5 points. Pennsylvania moved into the lead with 674 points, while Johns Hopkins was a distant third with 298 points.

The Ladies set the tone right from the start of Friday's competition by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:35.47. That Kenyon squad consisted of Tina Ertl (Halle, Germany/Sportgymnasium Halle), Alyssa Toran (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land), Jessica Wise (Metairie, LA/St. Martin's), and Elizabeth Carlton (Cheyenne, WY/Cheyenne Central).

Carlton and Ertl also swam a leg on the Ladies second-place 400-yard medley relay team. The pair joined Carolyn Barer (Edina, MN/St. Patrick's) and Jessica Connors (Cedarburg, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels) to produce another NCAA 'A' time by finishing up in 3:52.33.

In between the relay events, Carlton claimed second place in the 50-yard freestyle by clocking in at 23.86, while Ertl registered another second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle with an automatic qualifying time of 1:50.86. Additionally, Connors took second and chalked up one more NCAA 'A' time by finishing the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:05.23.

Tracy Menzel (Greencastle, IN/Greencastle) placed third, just behind Connors, in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Adrienne Amador (Woodstock, GA/Woodstock) tacked on fourth-place swims in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.83) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:38.08).

As for the men, Kenyon failed to win any events Friday night, but did amass nine, top-five finishes. Among the highlights for the Lords was senior Joey Gosselar's (Holland, MI/West Ottawa) third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with an NCAA 'B' cut time of 57.86 seconds.

Two events later, sophomores Eric Dunn (Wilmington, DE/The Tatnall School) and Dustin Schneider (Janesville, WI/Craig) captured second and third place in the 400-yard individual medley with respective times of 4:04.40 and 4:06.21. Senior Eduardo Rodriguez (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Colegio Luiz de Queiroz) was right behind them with a third-place time of 4:06.28. All three times cleared the NCAA 'B' cut.

Earlier in the meet, sophomore Matt Harris (Laurel, MD/DeMatha) raced to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly with another NCAA 'B' time of 1:54.38. His showing was sandwiched by fourth-place finishes from both the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay teams. Harris and junior Marc Christian (Rehoboth, MN/Bishop Freehan) swam legs in both of those relays.
