100 Back – Shealy Shocks The Field

Georgia seems to be on FIRE as Courtney Shealy, swimming in lane 2, stormed from behind to win the 100 Back (58.66), just off the world and American record of 58.50. Catherine Fox, who won this event in 1997 and ’98, and set an American record for 100 yards in prelims last year, jumped out to the lead and turned first at the 50 in 28.51. Fox maintained her lead through the final turn, but then began to fade as Shealy turned on the juice. At the end it was Shealy with her second individual title of the meet, followed by Cal’s Haley Cope (59.17) and Arizona’s Beth Botsford (59.34). Stanford’s Fox was fourth (59.35), her teammate Shelly Ripple fifth (59.56) and Arizona’s Denali Knapp sixth (59.92).
Rounding out the top eight were Summer Mack of N. Carolina (1:00.35), and Julie Manitt of AZ (1:01.15)
