Iona Sweeps Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, Connecticut, November 29. IONA swept Fairfield in both the men's (143-94) and women's (123-114) meets held in Fairfield on Tuesday.

The men, with diver Chris Cafici and four others sitting out, swam by the Stags as Tim Morse and Matt Magura were individual event winners.

Morse was first in the 1500 free and 400 free, while Magura won the 200 IM and 100 breast. The Gaels sealed the victory as David Gartman, Damian Kulczycki, Patrick St. Cin, and Drew Finneran picked up a win over the Stags in the 200 free relay.

The women's meet proved to be a back-and-forth affair going down to the final 200 medley relay where senior co-captain Susi Brackett combined with Shea Dix, Angela Kohloff and Dana Patterson to clinch the deciding relay by 1.8 seconds over the Lady Stags. However, it was a great 1-3-5 effort by Amanda McCarthy, Erin Finnegan and Kristin Heller in the 100 breast that brought the Gaels to a 110-110 tie for the day, marking the only time all meet they were even with the deciding race.

"It was very exciting and every race counted, and our women really responded well. Hopefully this is a meet we will build off into Canisius Saturday," said Nick Cavataro.
