Loyola Inks Two Recruits

BALTIMORE, Maryland, November 27. THE Loyola College swimming program has announced the signing of two recruits for next season. Caitlin Cassidy and Jonathan Wertz will join the Greyhounds as freshmen in 2007-08, Head Coach Brain Loeffler announced today.

"Both Jonathan and Caitlin have a tremendous amount of potential," says Coach Loeffler. "These signings set the stage for a great incoming class and is a great indication of the direction our program is taking. We really believe our program is on the brink of competing for a MAAC title on both the men's and women's sides and these signings bring us one step closer to making that a reality in the very near future."

Wertz comes to Loyola via Unionville High School in West Chester, Pa. He swims for Golden Ram Aquatics Club and has posted impressive times in the 100 Fly (51.76), 100 Free (47.85), 100 Back (54.18) and 200 Back (1:56.91). Wertz is also a NCSA Junior Nationals member and has earned All-America consideration in the 100 Fly, an event he is expected to place well in for the Greyhounds.

"Jonathan has a reputation of being an extremely hard worker, and that attitude will be a great influence on our team next year as we graduate some extraordinary seniors," says Coach Loeffler. "We expect him to compete for MAAC titles in various events, but particularly the 100 Fly."

Cassidy is a native of Edison, N.J., where she swims for the Jersey Gators Swim Club and Bishop George High School. She competes in the butterfly, freestyle and backstroke events, and with top times like 24.77 in the 50 Free, is expected to compete for a MAAC title in that event.

Additionally, Cassidy is a USA Swimming Sectionals Qualifier, a first-team all-state selection in 2006, a two-time Middlesex County Swimmer of Year, a Greater Middlesex County Conference Champion and a record holder in both the 50 Free and 100 Fly at Bishop George. Her top 100 Fly time is 58.75.

"We are very excited Caitlin has decided on Loyola," adds Coach Loeffler. "She is poised to become a top sprinter both on our team and in our conference. Like Jonathan, we expect Caitlin to compete for various MAAC titles next year and throughout her four years at Evergreen."
