Minnesota Men Continue Dominance

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., November 17. THE University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team continued to dominate the Minnesota Invitational, holding a 530-point lead over second-place Wisconsin after the second day of the Minnesota Invite, held at the University Aquatic Center.

The Golden Gophers hold a two-day total of 1,074 points, while the Badgers are in second with 544 points and Florida Atlantic is third with 298 points. The Gophers conclude the Minnesota Invite tomorrow, with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals set for 3 p.m. Platform diving action will be at noon.

Minnesota started the second day just as it had yesterday with the Gophers placing in the top two in a relay. Minnesota's Dan Berve, Colin Lee-To, Matt Engel and Igor Cerensek clocked a winning time of 1:30.34 in the 200 medley relay. Minnesota's B relay of David Plummer, Drew Knoechel, Ales Volcansek and Mario Delac chipped in a second-place time of 1:31.09.

Russ Payne won the 400 individual medley with a time of 3:58.82, while Alex Wood added a second-place time of 4:00.33. For the first time in the invite the Gophers did not win an event, coming in the 18th event of the meet in the 100 fly. However, the Gophers placed five in the A Final. Berve led the Gophers in the event with a time of 49.69, but Wisconsin's Scott Rice added a winning time of 49.62 to win the event. Evan Bernier finished third in a time of 50.00, while Engel added a fifth-place showing and a time of 50.27. Hiro Sugimoto rounded out the top eight with a time of 51.05.

Ray Betuzzi won his second event of the invite, this time in the 200 free in a time of 1:39.24. He won the 500 free event yesterday in a time of 4:27.56. Following Betuzzi in the 200 free was Cerensek with a second-place time of 1:39.52 and Tyler Schmidt with a fourth-place time of 1:40.76.

Lee-To won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 55.76, while Jason Timmer placed third in 56.97. Plummer won the 100 back with a time of 48.61, followed by Berve in third with a time of 50.00. Mike Woodson placed fourth in the same event in 50.77.

The Gophers closed the second day with a win in the 800 free relay. Bernier, Schmidt, Cerensek and Betuzzi combined for a time of 6:39.23 for the win. Minnesota's B relay of Knoechel, Zach Wood, Adam Weis and Woodson added a third-place finish in a time of 6:49.03.

In diving action, Cole Young won the 3-meter event. Young placed first with a score of 302.45, while Shaun Kennedy finished second with a score of 293.95.

The final events of the Minnesota Invite include the 1650 Free, the 200 Back, the 100 Free, the 200 Breast, the 200 Fly and the 400 Free Relay. Platform diving will be held at noon.
