West Virginia Takes Terp Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, November 19. WEST Virginia emerged victorious on both the men's and women's side at the Terrapin Cup. On the women's side, West Virginia was victorious with 641.5 points. University of Kansas came in second with 609 points and the Terps claimed a third-place finish with 370.5 points. In the men's division West Virginia was victorious with 860 points, followed by NC State (721 points) in second and University of Connecticut in third (641 points). The Terps finished in seventh place accumulating 149 points.

The night opened with the 1650 free. Freshman Terp Andrea Lehner (Orchard Park, N.Y.) placed third in the event with a 16:48.97.

In the 200 back, Lehner led the Terps in fourth place (2:03.64) followed by freshman Jackie Davidson (Beverly, Mass.) in 15th (2:07.23) and junior Kirsten Jones (Lafayette Hill, Pa.) in 22nd (2:07.23).

Sophomore Yelena Skalinskaya (Almaty, Kazakhstan) led the Terps in the 100 free placing 10th (51.54). Junior Maya Finkler (Rishon le-zion, Israel) followed in 18th place (52.09) with Davidson in 21st (52.55).

In the 200 breast, junior Katarina Csomova (Komarno, Slovakia) came in 24th place with a time of 2:25.41.

Maryland had four women qualify for finals in the 200 fly. The Terps dominated the event with freshman Jen Vogel (Hingham, Mass.) taking first (2:01.91). Freshman Nina Rossi (Princeton, N.J.) followed in 5th (2:04.17), freshman Annie Broome (Knoxville, Tenn.) placed 7th (2:05.33) and freshman Patty DeScenza took 8th (2:06.87).

The three-day Terrapin Cup Invitational ended with the 400 free relay. The team of Lehner, Skalinskaya, Finkler, and Davidson finished fourth (3:26.66).

The night opened with the 1650 freestyle. Freshman Chris Rouchard (Westlake, Ohio) placed 11th in the event with a 16:21.64.

In the 200 backstroke, junior Eric Thomasson (Severna Park, Md.) swam to 18th place with a 1:56.22.

Senior Danny Gray (Carlisle, Pa.) led the Terps in the 100 free placing 9th (46.01).

Junior Derek Hock (Aliquipa, Pa.) advanced to finals in men's 3 meter diving. Hock placed sixth with 227.65 points tonight's session.

In the breast, senior Tim Shepard (Catonsville, Md.) placed 17th with a time of 2:08.84.

Maryland had three men qualify for finals in the 200 fly. Thomasson swam to 20th place (1:57.79) followed by freshman Aleksandar Damjanic in 22nd (1:58.49) and junior Ken Golaszewski (Boulder, Colo.) in 23rd (1:59.52).

The three-day Terrapin Cup Invitational ended with the 400 free relay. The team of sophomore Dong Kim (Bucks Co., Pa.), Gray, sophomore Andrew Weinert (Allentown, Pa.), and Damjanic placed sixth (3:07.27) and the team of freshman Ryan Greene (Minnetonka, Minn.), sophomore Jake DiPiazza (Silver Spring, Md.), sophomore Kyle Glennon (Jarrettsville, Md.), and Golaszewski finished 21st (3:15.12).

The Terps will return to action in a home meet against Western Kentucky on Friday, December 1st. The meet will begin at 4:00 pm at Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium. The following day, the men will join the Maryland women's team in an away meet against West Virginia on Saturday December 2nd. The meet will begin at 2:00 m.
