Seminoles Take Charge At Nike Cup

Chapel Hill, N.C., November 17. The Florida State men's and women's team lead the Nike Cup with the respective scores of 770 and 639 in day two of the Nike Cup.

The Carolina men's and women's teams stood strong in fourth and second place, respectively, after the final session of day two of the Janis Hape Dowd Nike Cup on Friday. Florida State tops both standings, with 639 for the Seminole women and 770 points for the men, after two days of competition.

In the first event of the evening, Florida State took home both the men's and women's 200-yard medley relay. The women topped their competition with 1.41:90. The Seminole men came in at 1:29.71. Both the Florida State and Kentucky women had NCAA consideration qualification times. The Tar Heel women placed two teams in the top 10, 6th and 10th, while the men took 8th.

Carolina swimmer Alison Clemens had an outstanding heat to take first place in the women's 400-yard individual medley. Her time of 4:22.96 met NCAA B time qualification standards and set a new career best. Millie Campbell, from Virginia Tech, registered a 4:24.10 to seize second place.

Steve Roof of Florida State continued his strong showing after winning the 500-yard freestyle on day one of the Nike Cup by taking first place in the men's 400-yard individual medley with a 3:54.74. North Carolina fared well with Chip Peterson placing second in the Super Finals with a 4:00.88 and Jeff James taking first in the Finals heat with a 4:00.61. Tar Heel sophomore Yi-Khy Saw finished in the top 10, taking 8th overall, as well as Carolina freshman Jason McLaughlin who took 10th.

Kentucky junior Jenny Bradford also won her second event of the Nike Cup on day two. After winning the 50-yard freestyle on day one, she took the 100 yard butterfly on Friday with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.74. Lauren Sparg, Florida State, and Heather Bradford, Kentucky, both met NCAA consideration qualification standards with their times. Carolina's Lindsey Marck placed fourth with a final time of 55.94.

In the men's 100 yard butterfly Scott Beard, Virginia Tech, finished first registering a time of 48.17, meeting NCAA B qualification standards. Virginia Tech also took second place in the event with senior Gus Calado's 48.66.

Clemson won its first event of day two with Michelle Parkhurst swimming to first place in the women's 200-yard freestyle with a 1:49.19, an NCAA B qualifying time. North Carolina freshman Eliza Butts tied for 7th overall with Lauren Willis of Kentucky. Both swimmers had a time of 1:51.39. Tar Heel freshman Ashley Howard rounded out the top 10 with a 1:51.74.

Florida State junior Kyle Young topped the men's 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:38.21. North Carolina had three finishers in the top 10. Sophomore Hank Browning took second with a 1:39.22, junior Philip Owen finished ninth with a 1:42.35 and freshman Chip Peterson registered a 1:42.47 to finish 10th.

Lauren Brick, Florida State, set a meet record Friday morning in the preliminaries with a 1:01.17 in the women's 100-yard breaststroke. In Friday night's Super Finals, Brick won the event with a 1:01.51, an automatic NCAA qualifying time. Jessica Botzum, Virginia Tech, and Lindsay Myhre, Kentucky, met NCAA B qualification standards with times of 1:02.48 and 1:03.43, respectively. North Carolina grabbed the ninth and 10th spots with Kelsey Morrissy finishing with a 1:04.84 and Alison Clemens registering a 1:04.87.

In the men's 100-yard breaststroke, Kentucky sophomore Mickey Malul set a Nike Cup record with a time of 54.05, an NCAA consideration qualifying time. Billy Jamerson, Florida State, also met the NCAA B qualifying standard coming in second with a 54.22. Tar Heel swimmer Aaron Burns finished tenth with a time of 58.34.

Michelle Parkhurst, Clemson, followed up her first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle by winning the women's 100-yard backstroke with a time of 55.61. Both Parkhurst and second place finished Romy Altmann, Florida State, met the NCAA B qualifying standards with their times. North Carolina placed three swimmers in the top 10 with Meagan Eickman taking 4th and Megan Steeves and Eliza Butts taking 5th and 9th, respectively.

Florida State's Jarryd Botha took first place in the men's 100-yard backstroke with a 48.69, an NCAA qualifying time. He finished just ahead of Seminole teammate Ian Powell, who took second place with a 49.38. Carolina swimmers Keith Laabs, taking 7th with a 50.55, and Jeff James, taking tenth with a 51.24, finished in the top 10 for the event.

Kentucky's women's 800-yard freestyle relay team topped the rest of the field to take first place with a time of 7:23.10, an NCAA consideration qualifying score. They were followed by Florida State and North Carolina in second and third, respectively. The Tar Heels' B relay also took 6th in the event.

In the final event of day two, Virginia Tech won the men's 800-yard freestyle relay with a 6:38.19. Kentucky and Florida State rounded out the top three. North Carolina took fourth place with a time of 6:46.34.
