Kowal Wins Close 200 IM -- March 16, 2000
The 200 individual medley was a nail-biter, with Georgia’s Kristy Kowal—last year’s NCAA Swimmer of the Year—battling Cal’s Elli Overton stroke-for–stroke over the final 100 meters. Overton had grabbed the lead with a 32.67 second backstroke leg, turning more than a second ahead of the field. Kowal used her breaststroke strength to overtake the Aussie in the first 25 meters, but Overton would not give up. The two turned at 150 meters almost simultaneously, with Kowal holding a slim, 12-hundredths of a second lead. Overton made her move on the next lap, making the final turn just ahead of Kowal. As the two battled down the final 25 meters, Overton maintained a lead of several inches. But it was Kowal whose lunge reached the wall first. Kowal’s 2:10.69 was five-hundredths ahead of Overton.
