Meet of the Week: St. Olaf Tops Competitors in Quad Meet

COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 12. THE St. Olaf men's and women's swimming and diving teams enjoyed a successful day of competition in their home pool.

The Oles women, who participated in a quadrangular meet with St. Mary's, St. Catherine's and Augsburg, defeated each of its competitors. While their male counterparts swam in the traditional dual-meet format against St. Mary's, they won the meet, 102-90. Both teams chose not to score events following the 100-yard freestyle.

Women's One-meter
St. Olaf swept the event, capturing the top three places. Amanda Shuck (126.55) edged out teammate Elizabeth Manning (125.80) by less than a point to win the event. Amy Phillips followed the women, taking third by just three-tenths of a point with a score of 103.75. St. Mary's Sarah Hayden was responsible for the team's highest place of fourth in a score of 103.40.

Men's One-meter
Cardinal diver Curtis Kempton secured his 1-meter diving title with a score of 137.90. The remaining two places went to St. Olaf divers Blaise Douros and Reed Price, who finished second and third, respectively. Douros recorded a score of 127.00 while Price posted 84.65 points.

Women's 200-yard medley relay
St. Olaf opened the meet with a win in their home pool. The relay team of Mikalay Meyer, Julia Rood, Kelly Dolan and Annie Gatzlaff stopped the clock first in 1:56.76. The quad of Courtney Keyler, Danielle Braun, Nora Erfort and Brianna Braun touched in second with a time of 2:02.55. The St. Olaf ‘B' team, comprised of Erica Perry, Jamie Fredeen, Carly O'Neill and Christina Roberts rounded out the top three in 2:02.84.

Men's 200-yard medley relay
The St. Olaf men's team followed their female counterparts, claiming the top three spots in the first event. In a close race, the ‘B' team of Kaegan Recher, Adam Thomas, Adam Meyer and Pete Heidorn were responsible for the win (1:43.47). Teammates Joe Anderson, Nelson Westby, Eric Tvedy and Josh Kolb, of the ‘A' team took second with 1:44.91. Capturing the third-place spot was the final St. Olaf squad of Jake Koch, Tom Kukla, Ben Wareham and Erik Witzel with 1:48.23.

Women's 1000-yard freestyle
The Oles continued to dominate, with Aly Janzen capturing first in 11:24.14 and teammates Christine Schaplowsky and Jessica Phillips taking the next two spots with the respective times of 12:16.50 and 12:38.12. Kim Folden (12:49.84) was the top finisher for St. Catherine's, while Kasey Schultz (12:54.28) was the fastest St. Mary swimmer in the event.

Women's 200-yard freestyle
St. Olaf swept the top two places in the event. Erin Anderson touched in ahead of the group with a time of 2:06.41. Teammate Laura Haynes edged out St. Catherine swimmer Erica Campbell for second place. Haynes finished in 2:07.37 while Campbell came in two-tenths later at 2:07.52. Jenniver Salzman (2:16.78) was the first St. Mary's swimmer to finish. Stephanie Storlie posted a time of 2:25.17 – Augsburg's fastest swim in the event.

Men's 200-yard freestyle
The Oles men claimed the first three places in the event. Finishing first was Mike Jessop in 1:48.42, with teammates Nate Bentley and Brock Edwards taking the next two spots. Bentley stopped the clock at 1:49.48 for second place and Edwards grabbed third with 1:51.21. Cardinals' swimmer Tom Walsh recorded his team's fastest time of 2:06.79.

Women's 100-yard backstroke
Courtney Keyler produced the first win of the meet for St. Mary's when she stopped the clock first at 1:08.57. The Oles took second in the event with Julie Howard touched in with 1:10.09. Natalie Sinkler rounded out the top three in a time of 1:10.46. Sam Sedlak was the first Augsburg swimmer to get to the wall, finishing in 1:18.77.

Men's 100-yard backstroke
Leif Moe-Lobeda led St. Olaf teammates in yet another sweep of the top three places with his time of 56.31. Ben Meyer (58.33) and Tom Kirihara (59.07) followed with respective second and third-place finishes.

Women's 100-yard breaststroke
Danielle Braun of the Cardinals picked up an individual win in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing three seconds ahead of her next competitor. The Oles' Christina Roberts (1:17.58) notched out Jennifer Lippitt (1:17.89) of St. Kate's to be the runner-up in the event. Sonya Stepanova (1:26.46) was Augsburg's top finisher in ninth-place.

Men's 100-yard breaststroke
St. Olaf and St. Mary's each entered just one swimmer in the sprint breaststroke event. Pete Heidorn (1:09.13) of the Ollies beat out the Cardinals' Brian Joyce (1:09.17) by just four one-hundreths for the win.

Women's 200-yard butterfly
With no other teams entered in the event, St. Olaf swept the 200-yard butterfly. Kelly Dolan finished first amongst her teammates in a time of 2:24.34. Carrie Heiberg grabbed second with 2:26.83, while Carly O'Neil swam to the bronze-medal spot in 2:37.68.

Men's 200-yard butterfly
St. Olaf was again the only team to enter swimmers in the longer butterfly event. Andy Tompsett (2:13.28) won in a sizeable lead while Zack Harlander was the runner-up swam in 2:21.17.

Women's 50-yard freestyle
The Oles dominated the sprint, going 1-2-3 in the event. Julia Rood hit the wall first in 26.24. Mikayla Meyer stopped the clock next in 26.31 while Jessie Gibbons rounded out the medal positions with 26.52. Stefanie Sanders produced Augsburg's highest finish of the meet when she placed fourth with 27.43. St. Kate's Morgan Foster finished in 28.00 as the team's highest placer in sixth. Brianna Braun's eighth-place finish was the top place for St. Kate's.

Men's 50-yard freestyle
In a close race, the Cardinals' John Fox touched (22.99) out Brock Edwards (23.07) for the win by less than one-tenth. DB Mitchell finished third in 24.12.

Women's 100-yard freestyle
St. Olaf picked up another win when Annie Getzlaff touched in first with 58.09. St. Kate's Erica Campbell swam 58.65 for second place. Another Ole, Carly O'Neil, took third-place with her 1:00.87 in the event. Nora Erfort (1:01.12) recorded the Cardinals' highest place of fourth. Melissa Warfield's time of 1:01.26 qualified as Augsburg's fastest time of the night.

Men's 100-yard freestyle
DB Mitchell swam a 54.55 to claim the win for the Oles. A pair of Cardinals swimmers picked up the next two spots. Steve Wishalla swam to second place with 55.86 while Eric Hills rounded out the podium with 55.92.

Women's 200-yard backstroke
Natalie Sinker recorded a win for St. Kate's with her 2:30.79. Cardinals swimmers followed as Courtney Keyler (2:31.33) and Sarah Ruether (2:56.87) filled second and third, respectively. Although St. Olaf chose to swim the rest of the events exhibition, Carrie Heiberg of St. Olaf swam the fastest time in the event with 2:25.04.

Men's 200-yard backstroke
St. Olaf was the only team to enter swimmers in the event despite no longer counting their points towards the score. CJ Wagner recorded the fastest time of 2:05.17, while Tom Kirihara finished two seconds later in 2:07.23. Ben Meyer rounded out the trio in 2:09.96.

Women's 200-yard breaststroke
The Cardinals' Danielle Braun won the event in 2:42.16. Kasi Clauson of Augsburg was the runner-up in 2:44.62. St. Kate swimmer Jennifer Lippitt earned the bronze when she finished in 2:47.64. Julia Rood of St. Olaf finished ahead of the competition with a time of 2:34.85.

Men's 200-yard breaststroke
John Fox was responsible for the win with 2:27.60. Although Oles swimmer Landon Seebert swam the event in 2:25.14, the team did not count his points in its score.

Women's 500-yard freestyle
Kasey Schultz stopped the clock in 6:14.96 ahead of a slue of St. Kate swimmers for the win in the distance event. Kim Folden, who placed second, recorded her team's fastest time of 6:22.85. Her teammate, Amanda Gustason, swam to third in 6:55.12. Aly Janzen (5:32.60) was the fastest St. Olaf swimmer.

Men's 500-yard freestyle
Brian Joyce of St. Mary's was the only swimmer to score in the event, swimming the race in 5:44.11. Mike Jessop's sub-five minutes time was the fastest for the Oles.

Women's 100-yard butterfly
A pair of Augsburg women went 1-3 in the sprint fly event. Kasi Clauson stopped the clock at 1:07.95 for first place, while teammate Kaitlyn Stasiewicz picked up third place in 1:13.88. Cardinals' swimmer Nora Erfort was sandwiched between them at the No.2 spot with a time of 1:08.82. Jennifer Marzolf was responsible for the fastest time of 1:07.35 with St. Olaf.

Men's 100-yard butterfly
Tom Walsh was the sole scorer in the event, swimming it in 1:04.99 for the win. Leif Moe-Lobeda completed the race first with 56.78.

Women's 200-yard IM
St. Kate's took home the win when Jennifer Lippitt stopped the clock in 2:29.72. Liz Wiggen of Augsburg finished next in 2:41.03 for the silver. The remaining swimmers did not score, but Erin Anderson touched the wall first in 2:26.77.

Men's 200-yard IM
CJ Wagner was the sole swimmer in the event. He finished the race in 2:11.10, but did not post points for St. Olaf.

Women's 400-yard freestyle relay
St. Catherine ended the meet with a final win when the team of Natalie Sinker, Kim Folden, Morgan Foster and Erica Campbell finished ahead of the competition in 4:10.97. A pair of St. Mary's teams claimed the next two spots in times of 4:12.35 and 4:23.87.

Men's 400-yard freestyle relay
St. Mary's University picked up its final win of the meet in the last event. Tom Walsh, Brian Joyce, Steve Weishalla and Eric Hills took home the relay title with a winning time of 3:42.88. The remaining St. Olaf teams did not score. The ‘A' team finished in 3:29.39 while the ‘B' team posted a time of 3:30.15.
