William & Mary Sweeps Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C., November 11. WILLIAM and Mary's women's swimming and diving rolled past Georgetown today, winning the non-conference match-up 187-103. The Tribe improved to 5-2 (3-1 CAA), while the Hoyas fell to 1-4 (0-1 Big East).

The diving corps more than held their own today, winning both the 3-Meter and 1-Meter events with personal-best efforts. Junior Meg O'Connor (Loudanville, N.Y.) captured the 1-Meter program with a six-dive score of 240.75, the fourth-best performance in school history. Sophomore Samantha Greenwood (Wildwood, Ill.) followed suit in the 3-Meter dive, improving her hold on eighth-place in the school record books with a personal-best score of 216.75 and winning the event.

Freshman Katie Radloff (Arlington, Va.) was one of four Tribe athletes to pick up two victories on the evening. She was just shy of her own school record in the 50 free, timing 23.75 for the win, and won her debut in the 200 back in 2:07.03, the fifth-fastest time in school history. Marina Falcone (Potomac, Md.) won the 200 and 500 freestyles, touching the wall in 1:55.32 and 5:18.66, respectively.

Junior Meredith David (Somerdale, N.J.) claimed victory in the 100 back with a time of 58.72, and opened the meet by swimming the opening leg of the 200 medley relay that won in 1:50.29. She was joined in the relay by Rebecca Brofft (Fairfax, Va.), Erin Welshofer (Charlotte, N.C.), and senior captain Marnie Rognlien (Nokesville, Va.). Welshofer also won the 200 fly, swimming the course in 2:08.52.

Several more Tribe swimmers picked up event victories this afternoon. Senior captain Kelly Reitz (Chesapeake, Va.) swam 1:07.03 for the win in the 100 breast, and sophomore Sara Fitzsimmons (Lorton, Va.) won the 100 free in 55.16. Freshman Tage Waite (Norfolk, Va.) earned her first victory of the year in the 1000 free with a time of 10:46.66, and classmate Courtney Alles (Manassas Park, Va.) took the 200 breast in 2:29.78.

The Tribe men's swimming and diving team won handily over Georgetown this afternoon in the final dual meet of the fall, 155-110. With the win, William and Mary moved to 5-1 (3-0 CAA), while Georgetown fell to 0-5 (0-1 Big East). With four meets remaining on the schedule, the Tribe has already tied last season's win total, and stands assured to finish no worse than .500 for the first time since 1998-99.

The 200 medley relay team of David Mangini (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), Jason Brisson (Richmond, Va.), senior captain Joey Peterson (Williamsburg, Va.), and Kevin Gallagher (Bridgewater, N.J.) started the afternoon with a victory, the first of many, timing 1:40.11 for a comfortable margin of victory. Brisson also claimed the victor's laurels in the 100 breast, swimming the course in 1:02.09.

Sophomore Jeff Collier (Salem, Va.) won a pair of events, swimming 10:04.89 in the 1000 free and 4:52.77 in the 500 free. Likewise, Shawn Matthews (Rumson, N.J.) claimed the 200 free in 1:48.50 and the 200 back in 1:55.26. Single event winners included Nick Duda (Vienna, Va.) in the 100 free with a time of 47.80. Sophomore Nader Amer (Yorktown, Va.) won the 50 free in 22.39, and junior Alex Jendzejec (Reston, Va.) took the 200 breast in 2:18.03. Senior Peter King (Falls Church, Va.) was victorious in the 100 fly, touching the wall in 53.67 seconds.
