Ohio State Squashes Kenyon, 209-84

COLUMBUS, Ohio, November 11. THE Ohio State men's swimming and diving team defeated Kenyon, 209-84, Friday in the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The Buckeyes swept the top three places in seven events.

The men opened the meet going 1-2 in the 200-yard medley relay. Relay members RJ Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Felipe Travesso (So., Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Lawrences North), Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) and Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) were responsible for the win. The quad of Dan Novak (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil/Foothill), Daniel Malnik (Fr., Rishon le-Zion, Israel/Gan-Nahum), Chandler West (Fr., Atlanta, Ga/Chattahochee) and Michael Kelley (Fr., Westerville, Ohio/Westerville North) took second place.

Captain Doyle was one of four Buckeyes to score double wins for the night. He stopped the clock at 1:40.82, four seconds ahead of the next finisher -teammate Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill). Doyle also won the 100-yard butterfly in 49.20. Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) also spread his wins over two strokes. His first win came in the 200-yard butterfly (1:51.45), with the second in 100-yard freestyle (47.10). Lemyre and Voelker took the next two spots in the sprint freestyle event.

The Buckeye swimmers also claimed the first three places in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle. Lemyre was the frontrunner in the 100-yard backstroke (50.51) with Nate King (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) taking the longer distance in 1:49.79. Voelker was responsible for the win in the 50-yard freestyle (21.51).

Malnik captured wins in both breaststroke events. He touched in at 57.76 in the 100-yard breaststroke for his first collegiate title, with Travesso and King taking the next two spots. The freshman later cruised by competitors in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:04.64), finishing four seconds ahead of the next closest swimmer to claim his second win of the night.

Buckeye divers shut out the Lords on both the 1- and 3-meter. Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash/Cascade Christian) won the 1-meter with a score of 345.37. Ryan Jefferson (Fr., Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood) and Nick Hannenman (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/Upper Arlington) took the next two respective places. Harkness was again the gold medalist on the 3-meter with Burkley Showe (So., Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) taking second and Jefferson capturing third place.

"It's always great to swim against Kenyon," Bill Wadley, head swimming coach, said. "They have such a great winning tradition in our sport. Our teams have a fun competitive tradition. We had some good swims tonight: Matthias in the 200 fly, Nate in the 200 back and Doyle in the 100 fly. Our goal is to be competitive in the relays every time out, and we did that tonight. But we need to be faster tomorrow and next week. That is our challenge."
