Washington State Picks Up Win Over Washington

PULLMAN, Washington, November 10. WASHINGTON State swimming set three Gibb Pool records Friday en route to capturing their third victory in program history over archrival Washington. The Cougar win was the first over the Huskies since 2001. Senior All-American Erin McCleave paced all scorers with 27 points and the Cougars took first place in 10 of 14 events.

"It was a total team effort," said Quam. "They've been building confidence within themselves as racers and getting up and stepping up with confidence on the blocks. That was key as well as not relaxing in the second half and knowing the Huskies were going to come fighting back. This was a great win."

The Cougars were on the attack from the start as the relay team of Bryn Mooney, Monika Povilonyte, Michaela Ahlin and Jamie MacLeod took first place in the 200 medley relay. Their time of 1:45.31 was a Gibb Pool record.

The Cougars swept the top three spots in the second event, the 1000 yard freestyle. Senior Kayli Changstrom finished first with a time of 10:24.01 followed by teammates Lina Daugvilaite and Laurie Gregg in second and third, respectively.

Senior Erin McCleave kept the Cougars' chances alive with an individual victory in the 200 freestyle. McCleave's time of 1:49.75 was an NCAA "B" Consideration standard time, the second she has posted this season, and bested her own Gibb Pool record set earlier this season. McCleave's second Gibb Pool record of the night came in the 100 freestyle as she took first place with a time of 50.81 and achieved the NCAA "B" Consideration standard for the event. McCleave also placed first in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA "B" Consideration time of 4:53.49.

Changstrom's second individual win of the night came in the 400 individual medley (4:31.16). Junior Bryn Mooney's victory in the 100 butterfly was her third individual win against the Huskies and her time of 56.73 was a season best. Elyse Peterson took first in the 100 breaststroke with a season best time of 1:04.68 and freshman Michaela Ahlin earned her ninth first place finish of the season with a win in the 200 butterfly. Ahlin's time of 2:03.55 was an in-season best time. Monika Povilonyte finished first in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.17).

Afton Pickett placed second in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events. Pickett turned in a season best time of 57.89 in the 100 backstroke and posted a second season best time of 2:03.53 in the 200 backstroke. McKenzie Reiter's time of 4:33.25 gave her a second place finish in the 400 individual medley and was a season best time.

For the Huskies, Jessica Gaines placed first in the 100 backstroke (57.44) and the 200 backstroke (2:03.06) and Rachel Seely placed first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 53.91. Washington also took first place in the 400 freestyle relay.
