Rupprath Excels at Bolzano Meet in Italy

BOLZANO, Italy, November 7. A quality field was on hand over the weekend for the Bolzano Meet in Italy. The short-course competition featured a number of solid performances, including a trio of victories from Germany's Thomas Rupprath. The veteran won the 50 butterfly (23.50), 100 fly (52.35) and 100 individual medley (54.99).

The German contingent also received triumphs from Janine Pietsch in the 50 and 100 backstroke events, thanks to times of 27.96 and 1:00.10. Meanwhile, Marco DiCarli won the 100 free in 48.67, an effort that held off American Jason Lezak (49.23). Lezak, though, took top honors in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 22.21.

The United States' Randall Bal was a double-winner in the men's dorsal events, as he took first place in the 50 distance in 24.39 and 100 distance in 52.35. Other winners included Great Britain's Darren Mew in the 100 breast (1:00.99), Italy's Alessandro Terrin in the 50 breast (27.67) and Aussie Michelle Engelsman in the 100 free (56.31).
