Crippen Sets National Prep Mark At Easterns; GA and Peddie Take Team Titles

Philadelphia, PA – 15-year-old Fran Crippen, younger brother of national champion Maddy Crippen, stroked his way to a national independent school record at the Eastern Interscholastic Championships, held at La Salle University, February 25-26.

Crippen, only a sophomore, swam the 500 yard freestyle in a blistering 4:20.44, hacking more than a second-and-a-half off the national prep school mark set nine years ago. The time represented a drop of some nine seconds from Crippen’s previous best.

Crippen, who also won the 200 free in 1:39.59, was one of three Germantown Academy swimmers to win two individual events at the prep school classic. Meg Peart, another 15-year-old sophomore, took the girls 50 free (22.93) and 100 free (50.74), while her senior teammate, Marie Labosky, won the 100 back (56.44) and 500 free (4:53.16).

Germantown copped the boys’ team title with 384 points, edging Mercersburg Academy (361) and Kiski School (341). The Peddie School emerged victorious in the girls team race with 528, just ahead of Germantown (505-1/2).
