Speedo Top 40 Water Polo Festival Continues

LOS ALAMITOS, California, November 4. THE sun was out early this morning and so were the fans. The stands were full of spectators at 9 a.m. for the first game of the Speedo Top 40 Festival presented by Mikasa.

Team Lotus took on Team Kosmic Khaos in Game 1. The young Lotus team battled hard but fell short, 9-3. Kosmic Khaos's Erika Figge led all scores with three goals. Figge's teammates, Moriah Van Norman and Annika Dries each pitched in with two goals of their own. Jessica Steffens was the leading scorer for Lotus with two of the team's three goals. Betsey Armstrong had 14 saves for Kosmic Khaos and Amber Oland finished with 11 saves.

In Game 2 of the Speedo Top 40, Team Sabotage defeated Team Dragon by the score of 9-7. Sabotage's, Brenda Villa led all scorers with four goals, recording a goal in each quarter. Teammate Brittany Hayes cashed in two goals of her own in the win. Team Dragon was down 8-3 going into the fourth quarter, but veterans Heather Petri and Natalie Golda lit a spark in the team's fourth quarter comeback, but fell short in the end.

Game 3 paired Team Lotus against Team Dragon. Both teams lost in their first games and were looking for a win. Team Dragon started out strong with six first-half goals, but in the second half, they cooled down only scoring one goal. Team Lotus made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, but came up short, losing 7-5. The leading scorer for Team Lotus was Tanya Gandy with two and for Team Dragon it was Lauren Wenger with three goals.

Game 4 matched Team Sabotage against Team Kosmic Khaos. Both teams won their first game of the day and were looking to add another one. The first quarter was played at a high tempo, with the score being 4-2 in Team Sabotage's favor. After that, it was a pretty intense defensive battle. With only :04 seconds remaining in regulation, Team Kosmic Khaos had one last chance to even the score and take it into overtime. But Sabotage put the pressure on and Khaos could not get a shot off, thus losing 6-5.

Day 2 is in the bag and day 3 looks to be even more intense with it being championship day. In the Open Tournament, NYAC will play SET for the Championship and Commerce will play SOCAL in the bronze medal game. The Top 40 medal games won't be decided until the final round robin games are played in the morning of Sunday, November 5.
