Missouri Continues to Shine at Mizzou Challenge

COLUMBIA, Missouri, November 4. JUST over a week ago freshman Colleen Gordon swam the second-fastest 1000 freestyle in Missouri history. On Saturday evening she laid claim to her first school mark as she broke the MU record in the 1650 free, posting an NCAA provisional time of 16:43.69 to cap off a day of four combined dual victories for the Tiger men and women.

The men (3-1) defeated Iowa, 94-33, in the morning session and Drury, 113-55, in the evening meet. The 25th-ranked Missouri women (4-1) outscored Iowa, 115-33, and Drury, 113-55.

Missouri's divers got things started with victories on both springboards in the morning dive session. Kendra Melnychuk took gold on the 3-meter with a score of 273.20 to account for a pair of golds and Greg DeStephen stepped up and scored a season-high 314.70 to earn nine points on the 1-meter board in both meets.

Junior Bennett Clark helped the MU men to a pair of victories with two individual golds, as he remained undefeated in both sprint freestyles on the year, improving to a combined 6-0. His time of 44.70 in the 100 free was a season-best and just seven-hundredths off the school-record he set last year. he also was a part of the Tigers' 200 and 400 free relay winners in the Iowa and Drury meets, respectively.

Freshman Martin Cernansky won the 200 breaststroke in the morning meet against Iowa's Dragos Agache – an NCAA qualifier a year ago – in a season-low time of 2:05.29, just 14-hundredths ahead of the Hawkeye.

Sophomore Jill Granger swam the second-fastest 400 IM of her career – 4:25.05 – as she out-touched classmate Lori Halvorson lead Mizzou to the top two spots in the Drury meet.

Senior Shannon Hogan had a strong day in the sprints as she won a combined four individual and relay races for the Tigers. One of her stronger performances came in her final swim of the day as she anchored the 400 free relay team to a come-from-behind win in 3:28.99 – their second-fastest time this year.

Sunday's invitational format which encompasses all five men's and women's teams should produce some fast times and good competition. Within that event will be the final dual meet of the weekend as Missouri and Louisville will go head-to-head. On the weekend, both MU and U of L are 3-0 in women's duals and the MU men will look to remain perfect in their fourth meet in three days against a Cardinal group that is 2-1 in the competition. Additionally, there will be a diving exhibition on the three-highest platform towers. Racing begins at 9 a.m. and diving at 10 a.m. at the Mizzou Aquatic Center.
