No. 11 Texas Falls to No. 14 Indiana, 138-105

AUSTIN, Texas, November 4. NO. 11 Texas (1-3) collected five individual victories but could not outlast No. 14 Indiana Saturday, falling by a 138-105 margin at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. UT junior Macie Garrett (Nashville, Tenn.) led the Longhorns with a pair of victories in the 500- and 1000-yard freestyle events.

"This is a tough loss for our team because it was a coaching error on my part in terms of putting some people in different events," said UT coach Kim Brackin. "Indiana came in really strong and ready to go, and I overestimated our ability to rebound from our meet last night at Texas A&M."

Garrett collected Texas' first victory of the day when she took the 1000 freestyle in 10:03.37, topping Indiana's Emma Berry by nearly two seconds. Senior Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.) chipped in the Longhorns' second win when she captured the 200 butterfly in a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 2:01.35.

Senior Connie Brown (Andover, Mass.) picked up Texas' second consecutive win by taking the 100 freestyle in a NCAA "B" cut time of 50.05. Senior Leah Avilla (Livermore, Calif.) posted the final event victory for the Longhorns in the highly-competitive 200 breaststroke, winning in a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 2:15.45.

Teammate and fellow senior Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.) also posted a NCAA "B" cut, as did sophomore Alexi Spann (Austin, Texas). Tinnon placed second in 2:15.67, while Spann took fifth in 2:17.42. Garrett added her second victory of the day in the 500 freestyle, just missing a NCAA "B" cut with a time of 4:54.54.

Notably, Brown's second-place showing in the 200 freestyle nearly earned her a second NCAA provisional qualifier. Brown took second in 1:50.38, missing out on a NCAA "B" cut by only eight one-hundredths of a second.

"As a group, our seniors did a nice job of trying to come back and take control of the meet," Brackin added. "I hope our underclassmen learn from that. We need to learn what it takes to come back and swim the next day after an evening meet the day before, and as I told the team, we need to learn from the loss."
