Akron Beats Buffalo, 168-127

AKRON, Ohio, November 3. FRESHMAN Katelyn Lofland broke the school record in the 1650 freestyle to help lift the University of Akron swimming and diving team to a 168-127 victory over Buffalo on Friday evening at the Ocasek Natatorium.

In her first collegiate run in the 1650 free, Lofland (Boise, Idaho/Home Schooled) shattered the school record by 11 seconds with a time of 17:22.48. The record time of 17:33.48 was previously held by teammate Danielle Beland, who posted that mark on Jan. 28, 2005 in the Ocasek Natatorium against Toledo.

"I am thrilled about how well we swam tonight," first-year head coach Nittaya Klim said. "I am very happy with the times we put up today and felt we came out from the start ready to go. Katelyn breaking the school record in the mile was exciting and overall I am just very happy with our performance."

The Zips got started fast, winning the 400 yard medley relay to get the meet underway. Kendall Karchner, Melissa Young (North Canton, Ohio/Westchester University (Pa.)), Danielle Beland (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada/St. Peters HS) and Ali Allwes (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Munroe Falls) teamed up to post a time of 3:57.84 to earn the win.

Karchner later went on to sweep both backstroke events for the Zips. The Maumee, Ohio (Maumee HS) native posted a time of 59.04 in the 100 and recorded a mark of 2:07.91 in the 200 to garner her third and fourth victories of the season.

Beland also went on to earn two individual victories for Akron, taking top honors in the 200 free in 1:55.18 and later tapping the wall in 57.72 in the 100 yard buttferfly.
