Georgia Leads Michigan After Day One

ATHENS, Georgia, November 3. THE Georgia swimming and diving teams opened a two-day meet with Michigan on Friday at Gabrielsen Natatorium, with the Lady Bulldogs grabbing an 86-62 lead and the Wolverines posting a 76-72 advantage.

The meet will conclude on Saturday morning at 11 with short-course yards events. On Friday, the teams competed in long-course meters.

"It was a good first day," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "We raced hard against a strong Michigan team. It's like a football game, and we just finished the first half. Michigan is the best the Big 10 has to offer."

The Lady Bulldogs opened the meet by winning the 400-meter medley relay as the team of Aleksandra Putra, Kelly McNichols, Lisa Caprioglio and Kara Lynn Joyce stopped the clock in 4:20.21. In the women's 400-meter freestyle, Claire Maust took first with a time of 4:22.30. Putra touched first in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 2:19.05. Joyce stopped the clock first in the 100-meter free with a time of 56.38.

Sebastien Rouault grabbed the Bulldogs' first win in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 3:56.62. In the 200-meter breaststroke, Neil Versfeld took first with a time of 2:14.89. Gil Stovall placed first in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:03.00. Rouault stopped the clock first in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 4:27.71. The 200-meter free relay team of Cameron Hollinger, Nathan Bibliowicz, Michael Cellini and Joe Smutz won with a time of 1:34.43.
