Notre Dame Sweeps Purdue

NOTRE DAME, Indiana, November 3. NOTRE Dame came out on top in an intra-state battle with Purdue. The No. 17 men took down No. 18 Purdue, 156-144, while the No. 20 women downed No. 25 Purdue, 185-115.

On the men's side, the Fighting Irish claimed victories in nine of 16 events, with senior Ted Brown (Kokomo, Ind./Western) and junior Jay Vanden Berg (Holland, Mich./Southfield Christian School) each posting two wins apiece. Brown notched a crucial win in the 200-yard IM, which was the second-to-last event of the meet. He also took the 200-yard free, while Vanden Berg won both the 1,000 free and 500 free.

Sophomore Jeff Wood (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport/Indiana) and freshman John Lytle (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) picked up wins in the 100-yard back and 100-yard free, respectively. They were also part of the winning 400-yard medley and 400-yard free relay teams. Joining them on the 400 medley unit were senior Tim Kegelman (Yorktown, Va./Tabb) and sophomore Sam Pendergast (Melbourne, Australia). Senior Louis Cavadini (South Bend, Ind./Riley) and freshman Andrew Hoffman (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) were the other two members of the 400 free relay unit that clinched the victory.

Diver Michael Bulfin (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas), a sophomore, registered a victory off of the three-meter board. Notre Dame's win snapped an 18-meet losing streak to the Boilermakers and it marked the first win against Purdue since 1966.

For the women, Senior Katie Carroll (Toledo, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) set the first Irish record in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:48.24. Carroll broke her own school record set last season. The mark was also a new pool mark and a NCAA `B" standard as well. Carroll also won both the 100-yard freestyle (51.06) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:02.93). The 200 IM time was also a NCAA `B' standard.

Sophomore Claire Hutchinson (Baltimore, Md./McDonough) set the second Notre Dame school record of the afternoon in the 1,000-yard freestyle with her time of 9:52.98. The mark broke Linda Gallo's mark set in 1998.

The 200-yard medley relay team of seniors Jessica Stephens (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) and Rebecca Grove (Yorktown Heights, NY/Yorktown), junior Caroline Johnson (Springfield, Mo./Glendale) and freshman Keri Masterson (West Hempstead, NY/Sacred Heart) started the day for Notre Dame with an event victory in a time of 1:44.60.

Caroline Johnson also won the 100-yard backstroke (56.89) and was part of 400-yard free relay winning team along with Grove, Carroll and sophomore Christa Riggins (Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope). Riggins also was the 50-yard freestyle winner (23.78).

Senior Julia Quinn (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.92) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:17.89). Other event winners for the Irish include freshman Stacey Nedrud (Melbourne Beach, Fla./Cocoa Beach) in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.09) and sophomore Casey Wagner (Glenshaw, Pa./Shady Side) in the 500-yard freestyle. Wagner's mark was also an NCAA `B' standard, as was second place finisher freshman Lexie Shue (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona Del Mar) mark of 4:53.98.
