UMass Rocks Stony Brook, 190-110 Women/185-112 Men

STONY BROOK, New York, October 21. IN the first dual meet of the season, the UMass men's and women's swimming & diving team dominated Stony Brook as the two teams combined for 23 first-place finishes in the 32 event meet. The men's team won 185-112, while the women's team won 190-110 at the Pritchard Gymnasium Pool.

Senior Liz Lovejoy lead all swimmers as she won three individual events and swam the anchor leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team. On the men's side, Evan Swisher and Nate Bromage each won two events to pace the Minutemen.

For the men, freshman Justin Brooks won the 1,000-yard freestyle after the 200 medley relay team opened the meet with a second-place showing. Bromage then won the 200-yard free followed by Swisher winning the 100-yard backstroke. The Minutemen started the meet taking the top-three spots in the 1,000 free and the 200 free.

Senior Greg Chartier and freshman Juan Moliere continued the strong performance for UMass winning the 200 butterfly and the 50 free, respectively.

Junior A.J. Vozella then picked up a win in the 100 free followed by Swisher picking up his second win of the day as he took first in the 200 back. Senior Jake Hogue won the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Tristan Partridge won the 500 free, and Bromage won the 100 fly to round out the individual swimming performances.

The diving team took the boards for the first time this season as junior R.J. Rappe swept the one-meter and three-meter dives.

In all, the Minutemen took the top-three spots in four different events.

In women's action, senior Vanessa Fleguel won the 100-yard backstroke as the Minutewomen swept the event. Fellow senior Liz Lovejoy followed suit two events later to win the 200 fly followed by Allison Volpe's win in the 50-yard free.

Lovejoy then earned her second and third wins of the meet when she took first in the 100-yard free and in the 500-yard free. Sophomore Jackie Porter sandwiched a win the 200 breaststroke between Lovejoy's two wins.

Sophomore Christa Narus, a native of Stony Brook, N.Y., made her trip a sound one when she won the 100-yard butterfly sparking a UMass sweep in that event as well.

Junior Samantha Demty closed out the individual action as she won the 200 individual medley followed by freshman Kathryne Chalikis and Collen McCann who took second and third, respectively in the final individual event.

The Minutewomen closed the meet with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay as Narus, Volpe, Porter, and Lovejoy teamed up to edge out Stony Brook by almost two seconds.

The UMass divers were strong today as sophomore Karen Upperco, the 2006 A-10 Diver of the Year, won both the one-meter and three-meter boards. UMass showed its depth as the Minutewomen swept the three-meter dive with senior Mary Jenkins taking second and sophomore Sarah Horstmann taking third.
