Aussie Swim Stars All Set For Olympic Trials

Australia’s best swimmers will vie for places on the 2000 Olympic Swimming Team when Australian Swimming hosts The Telstra 2000 Selection Trials and Australian Championships in Sydney in May.

The Sydney International Aquatic Centre, the Olympic swimming venue, will stage the eight-day championships between May 13 and 20.

It will be the biggest Australian Championship and Trials meet Australian Swimming Inc. has ever staged, with 8000 seats available throughout each of the 15 sessions. The program will mirror the eight-day Olympic program, giving Australia’s swimmers an ideal opportunity to again embrace the semi-final structure.

Some of Australian Swimming’s biggest names who will be vying for Olympic selection include:
a.. Ian Thorpe: Current world champion over 400m freestyle and world record holder for 200 and 400m freestyle
b.. Grant Hackett: Current World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific Champion over 1500m freestyle
c.. Susie O’Neill: Current Olympic, Commonwealth and Pan pacific champion over 200m butterfly
d.. Kieren Perkins: Reigning Olympic 1500m freestyle champion, 1992 Olympic champion and world record holder over 800 and 1500m freestyle.
e.. Michael Klim: The winner of five gold medals at the 1998 world championships and current world record holder for 100m butterfly
f.. Sam Riley: Former world champion over 100 and 200m breaststroke and world record holder and bronze medalist at the last two Olympic Games
g.. Matthew Dunn: World record holder for 400 IM short course and Olympic finalist 1992 and 1996
h.. Phil Rogers: Current world champion 200m breaststroke short course and Olympiuc bronze medallist in 1992 and 1996
i.. Daniel Kowalski: The winner of one silver and two bronze medals at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics
j.. Sarah Ryan: Silver medalist 4 x 100m medley relay team, Atlanta 1996
k.. Scott Miller: Silver medalist 1996 Atlanta Olympics
l.. Geoff Huegill: Bronze medalist m998 World Championships, Commonwealth champioin 100m butterfly
m.. Petria Thomas: Olympic silver medalist 1996 Atlanta Olympics, 200m butterfly.
For Thorpe, Hackett and Huegill they will be trying to qualify for their first Olympic team.

They will all put their reputations on the line against a host of rising stars and former champions, staking their claims as well, champions like Hayley Lewis, who will vie for a place on her third Olympic team.

Tickets will be available through Ticketek on 131931 on Monday, February 28 and NSW Tourism is also marketing the event with special packages designed to bring swimming fans into Sydney from all over Australia, all at affordable prices.
