Johnson Selected as Canadian Head Coach for 2007 FINA World Aquatic Championships

OTTAWA, Ontario, October 17. SWIMMING Canada announced Tuesday that Tom Johnson, Vancouver-based National Center Head Coach, has been chosen as head coach of the 2007 FINA World Aquatic Championships to be held in Melbourne Australia in March.

Johnson had been previously selected to the coaching staff for the 2007 FINA World Championships following the 2006 Pan Pacific Championships held in Victoria last summer which served as selection competition for Team Canada. Johnson’s swimmer Brent Hayden of Mission BC obtained the highest point score within Team Canada after winning a Gold Medal in the Men’s 100 Freestyle and a Bronze in the 50 freestyle, making Johnson eligible for the Head Coach position.

“It is with great pleasure that I greet Tom Johnson as Head Coach of the 2007 FINA World Aquatic Championship swim team” Pierre Lafontaine, CEO and National Coach for Swimming Canada, said. “Tom has demonstrated great leadership within the National Team Program and his experience on the international scene will be a great asset to this team.”

Johnson has one of the most impressive coaching records in Canadian swimming. He’s been named to Canada’s coaching staff at seven Olympic Games, eight World Championships and eight Commonwealth Games. As a club coach, Johnson’s teams have won 15 overall national team titles and 21 Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Crowns (12 for men and nine for women).

“It’s a great honor and opportunity for me to lead the Canadian Team as Head Coach” Johnson said. “Our challenges going into World Championships are large following the great success of the Team during 2005 Worlds and 2006 Pan Pacific which took place on our home turf. The coaching staff will play an important role in getting the swimmers excited about competing for Canada.”
